Pirates of the Great Salt Lake
Pirates of the Great Salt Lake
Two strangers band together to become the greatest pirates The Great Salt Lake has ever known and embark on a journey that leads to a pirate battle with their biggest rival over buried treasure.

If you understand that this movie is about a pair of 21st-century Utah pirates in search of hidden treasure, you begin to sense the level of silliness at work. Pirates of the Great Salt Lake aims for a Napoleon Dynamite-by-way-of-The Big Lewbowski vibe, in which the weirdest plot twists sit alongside the most mundane stuff of life. Two losers, played by Kirby Heyborne and Trenton James, pursue the pirate lifestyle as best they can, given their wooden swords and wobbly British accents and the fact that Johnny Depp has turned their kind into cute caricatures. Amazingly, they actually find part of a treasure map, which leads them into unexpected adventures involving a hidden cave, an ancient curse, and the cute girl who works on all-you-can-eat crab day down at the Fish House. This movie, a first-time effort from director E.R. Nelson, is as uneven as it is truly bizarre; for instance, one of the main characters is killed less than halfway through the picture, although he remains on hand as a ghost. The lack of a strong through line makes some of the film's digressions more annoying than wacky, and the low budget shows. But the Salt Lake location is a winner, and at least a couple of the performances display sharp comic instincts: Heyborne and Larry Bagby, the latter as a pawn-shop owner who becomes the pirates' main nemesis (he's the Danny McBride of the movie). Pirates didn't get a proper theatrical distribution, and it's easy to understand why, but it's got DVD cult potential. --Robert Horton

Fashion Place Mall opened in 1972 (my brother worked on the construction of the building when he was working for Hahn Corporation out of California). Sears was one of the original anchors which included Nordstorm's, ZCMI II, and Weinstocks with Dillards replacing the Weinstocks. The mall is going through a major remodeling that saw new stores for Dillards and Nordstorms and their existing stores demolished but Sears continues on as - is. The Sears Auto Center. The location had a Budget Car Rental for several years even after Sears divested itself of the company but it closed a few years ago. Avis moved in about a year or so ago.

In the summer of 2008, the largest delegation of Bhutanese ever to leave the country at once descended on Washington, DC. Their mission: to re-create a "living museum" to their country as part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival...including an authentic Bhutanese temple, built right on the National Mall.
What happens when people who've not been on a plane travel halfway around the world to a mobbed US city? What happens when summertime tourists meet up with people from the Happiest Kingdom on Earth?

An expurgated chapter of Radio Shangri-La, published by Crown in 2011.
