Happy New Year! Will we see you at our first meeting on Jan 9th?

Aaron Smith is a Mechanical Engineer with M&R Engineering Ltd.  He graduated from Dalhousie University in 2004.

Aaron has 12 years’ experience in the design, commissioning and analysis of building systems.  He is a certified Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP), Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP), an ASHRAE member, was a member of SPC-209 and a member of the Atlantic Chapter of the Canada Green Building Council.

To address the issue of energy modeling taking place too late in design process (or not at all), LEED v4 introduced the Integrative Process Credit which encourages energy simulation before the completion of the Schematic Design phase.  Following up on this, ASHRAE produced a new standard which documents relevant energy simulation methodologies throughout the whole design process from concept design through post-construction.  The result was ASHRAE Standard 209: Energy Simulation Aided Design for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings.

This presentation will provide an overview of Standard 209 and use examples to help show how you can achieve compliance. Some of the topics covered include load-reduction modeling, HVAC system selection modeling and comparison of modeled to actual energy consumption during the operational phase.

As the standard is designed to assist the whole design team in achieving a more energy efficient building and help owners procure the services of an energy modeling specialist, it will be of interest to a wide audience.

Did you know that the Halifax Chapter is hosting the Chapter Regional Conference (CRC) this August? We will have attendees from the 9 regional ASHRAE chapters visiting our city, and we intend to make it a memorable event, for all the right reasons.
