12-19 October 2013 - Clay Harvesting and Processing / Corrugated Cooking Pots
Post-Workshop Updates:

Learn to harvest and process local clay for use in pottery! We will visit a site we have discovered, collect some clay, and show all the steps required for processing. On the second day, we will learn the corrugated cooking pot method and each student will get to make a pot. You are welcome to attend one or both workshops. We are also offering additional "independent study" workshops throughout the week of 14-18 Oct for those who would like more time on thier pot or to make additional pieces. All participants should plan to attend the firing on 19 Oct, but we will fire your pot for you if you can't attend the firing. All levels of experience are welcome from beginners to advanced clay artists.

Workshops will be held at Asher and Antonia's off-grid homestead in Mimbres and will include a gourmet vegetarian lunch and pot-luck dinner on the evening of the pit firing. Participants are welcome to camp on the land. Finished pots can be picked up the day following the firing or we will arrange to delivery them.

Primitive Potter Antonia Young teaches ancient pottery at gatherings across the Western United States. Formerly a film computer visual effects artist in Los Angeles, she rediscovered her love for pottery several years ago and has been practicing hand-building with clay in the old way.  Her process is a journey back in time to walk with our ancestors and uncover their methods.  Without glazes or super heated kilns, she makes strong durable pottery for everyday use.  She appreciates the utilitarian purposes as well as artistic beauty of primitive pottery, a perfect merging of form with function.  She particularly enjoys sharing the art of our ancestors and making it accessible to people curious about the old methods
