Suvla Bay 1915
Arrived Gallipoli 10th August 1915. Desperate conditions and intense conflict high in the hills. Aged 18 but like many other enlisted in Local Territorial Battalion by lying about his age (Must have been 17, should be 19) and no questions asked of fit young men. Died during heavy fighting in hills high above the bay.

March 1918 saw the last great 'push' of the war, the Ludendorff offensive.' Huge numbers of the Fifth Army fell defending their ground.

"At around 5am on the 28th April 1917, the Hammers and the Footballers attacked the village of Oppy and were decimated by well prepared Germans. Bob Whiting was dead, as were nearly a quarter of the West Ham Battalion and the Footballers. That afternoon, West Ham Utd beat Portsmouth 5-2 at the Boleyn and were crowned Champions, ahead of Millwall, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal." West Ham Pals

The Division landed in Singapore early in 1942 and within a month surrendered to become prisoners of war. Many Essex men from the 4th and 5th Suffolks suffered and died under the conditions on the Burma Railway.'
