Concrete Canoe Team

Louisiana Tech University's American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is seeking your support in sponsoring our concrete canoe team in our goal of reaching the 27th Annual ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC), which will be held June, 2014 at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in Pittsburgh, PA. The Competition will showcase the works of some of the best and brightest civil engineering students.

Each year over 5,000 students from 200 from colleges and universities design, construct, and race concrete canoes in 18 regional competitions. The winners of those regional competitions and returning finalists, numbering 25 schools and 500 students, will meet at the national competition in Pittsburgh this year.

Louisiana Tech's team competes in the ASCE Deep South Regional conference each year in March. Our team has placed first in the regional conference four out of the past six years. Therefore, we have advanced and competed competitively in the national competition the past few years.

The competition gives us the opportunity to learn valuable lessons in concrete materials, mix design and performance, engineering, negotiation, teamwork and project management.

The competition consists of four categories: Aesthetics, racing, technical report, and presentation. Aesthetics is based on the canoe’s appearance along with a display board and a cross-section of the layers of the canoe. The races include five categories: Men’s Sprint, Women’s Sprint, Men’s Endurance, Women’s Endurance, and Co-Ed Sprint. The team frequently visits Lincoln Parish Park to practice racing in a canoe. The technical report and presentation gives our team the opportunity to discuss the process we utilize to construct our canoe.
