FAQs

As always, PM me on the forums if I have something wrong.

What was the Fog?
When TJ first released the game, he used sprites from other games for almost every dragon and creature.  This was copyright infringement, and he eventually took down the game and asked players in the forums to help make new, original sprites.  This was known as the Sprite Replacement Project.  This lasted for several months, and it was dubbed The Fog because all dragons (adult and otherwise) appeared as a cloud of fog when viewed.  In some cases, one dragon had only one sprite submitted to replace it (such as splits), and the only one submitted was used by default--situations like this, as well as dissatisfaction with some of the other sprites chosen, has led to continuations of the Sprite Replacement Project since.  Other dragons (namely blacks and vines) had more than one good sprite submitted, and in some cases those good sprites not chosen have been released later as alts.

The original sprites: [link]

I was NOT active in the forums at the time of the Fog, but I had my dragons posted on another site during that time.  I believe that the Fog lasted approximately from March 2008 to June 2008.

What order were the dragons released in?
The first thing to know is that dragons are often released in groups rather than one-by-one, and that many dragons and creatures already existed when the game was released.  The second thing to know is that TJ has not always announced releases, in the forums or otherwise, so in some cases dates are approximate or unknown.

Original dragons/creatures:
water
pebble
gray/storm
magi
vine
black
white
purple
mint
pink --now called bright pink to note the difference between these and new pinks
zombie --originally, these could be gotten at any time of year, but TJ temporarily took them away when people kept killing so many that their scrolls were burned.  On Halloween 2008, all older zombies returned to their scrolls and users were allowed to make new ones.  There is an automatic cap on kills now to prevent people from killing too often, so scrolls are no longer burned for this reason, but originally there was no cap and the number of kills permitted was not visible and had to be guessed at.
yoshi (blue, green)--now called dinos and altered for copyright reasons

Not-quite-original ( dates from TJ09's scoll ):
"There wasn't really a release schedule as there is now with stuff every month. Back then dragons just showed up as I found sprites to use." --TJ09
gold --June 2, 2007
chicken --June 2, 2007
neglected --June 5, 2007
yoshi/dino red and yellow --June 5, 2007
red --August 5, 2007 (forums opened on the 3rd)
silver --September 22, 2007
stone --October 5, 2007
split --October 12, 2007
paper --December 3, 2007

First new release:  December 25, 2007
holly

[FOG -- only paper and holly (and baby chicken) sprites remain the same; all other sprites replaced, with holly hatchie sprite used as the base for many new hatchie sprites.  Paper adult was shrunk down from original.]

Second new release:  Possibly released July 22 or 23, 2008, but not before July 21.
skywing
guardian

Third new release: these many have been released the same day as skywings and guardians, some confusion on dates here
alt vine
alt black

Fourth new release:  September 14, 2008
summer seasonal --these were released for only one week, with a long gap between these and autumns, leading to a lot of confusion over TJ's intentions.

Fifth new release:  October 31, 2008

Sixth new release:  November 28, 2008
autumn seasonal

Seventh new release:  December 20, 2008

Eighth new release:  December 24, 2008
yulebuck

Ninth new release:
leetle trees --released at the end of yulebucks and before the new year, these were dropped sporadically in between normal eggs and lasted only three days, with no mass drops; these were very difficult to obtain and have not been released again since, despite Kila's support of seasonal drops and different versions.  It is said that these were released only as an advertisement for another of TJ's pet games, leetles.com.  There was no announcement.
Re-dropped December 27th, 2010

Seventeenth new release:  November 22, 2009
ice
magma

Eighteenth new release:  December 25, 2009
snow angel --a snow angel's wing colors are determined by the scroll it is on, not by the dragon itself, and [unlike sweetlings] the version is unknown until it is an adult.  TJ  discovered that a method to figure out who would have which kind was leaked--this was a violation of the Terms of Service, though that was not clear until TJ took action; one night, everyone's snow angels turned into the kind with solid gold wings, then were re-shuffled when he changed the coding that determined what variation one got.  I was one of these users, and my snow angels originally had the white wings with gold stripes, now stuck with solid gold.  Many of us make a note of this event when writing our snow angel descriptions.

Nineteenth new release:  January 15, 2010
bluna (skywingXwater, skywingXdeep sea, skywingX waterwalker?)
canopy

Twentieth new release:  February 14, 2010
sweetling --alt sweetling, black with a skull mark rather than pink with a heart mark, were given to those who caught valentines at the start of the release and then ran afoul of a glitch that auto-abandoned them.  Like snow angels, the sweetling version is determined by the scroll it is on, not by the dragon itself.

How do we find out our scroll number?  Is finding out against the TOS?
This is absolutely not against the Terms of Service.  When I first joined the site, everyone had to link to their scroll using their number instead of their name, and some of the old links are still out there.  As far as I know, your number has zilch to do with the coding of the game... all it does is tell you how many people signed up before you. Here are a few ways to find your number, depending on which browser you use:

Firefox:   If you're on FireFox - right click and select 'View Page Info'. Select the 'Security' tab. Now press the 'View Cookies' button and look for the cookie named 'dragon[id]'. The content is your user ID.

Chrome:
Go to the wrench dropdown
Click "Options"
Go to "Under the Hood"
Scroll to "Cookie settings" and click "Show cookies"
Type "dragon" in the search bar
You will see dragcave.net, dragon[id]--click it
In the bottom of the window, "Content:" will be your user number.

Internet Explorer:
You can go straight to the Temp folder on your comp
Go to Temporary Internet Files find the cookie named dragcave, open and search for *dragon[id] in the text
Or if u wanna access the same folder through the browers it's Internet options >> history >> settings >> show files

What are the so-called "secret" pages?  Are we allowed to talk about them?
Also see here
Presumably, we can talk about the secret pages these days.  That has not always been the case.  "Secret" pages are open secrets, people know about them but there are often no links to them unless you already know what you're looking for.  In no particular order:

The infamous XD egg: http://dragcave.net/view/XD
The <3 egg from 15Jan10: http://dragcave.net/view/%3C3
The Thuwed page: http://dragcave.net/thuwed
"The Thuwed page also lets you know if you're on the waiting list for a 2nd-gen Thuwed or not. If you are, you get a bolded message at the top that says "You are currently on the breeding list."" --TPishek
The help page: http://dragcave.net/help (this page includes many useful links to other "secret" pages)
The Dorkface lineage/offspring page:
Holiday tree preview: http://dragcave.net/treepreview
Holiday tree ornament grab: http://dragcave.net/treeget
Terms of Service: http://dragcave.net/terms
The wilderness nursery:  (not always around-- when it is, there's a link on the main wilderness page) http://dragcave.net/wilderness/young
An example of strange things that happen in the wilderness:
http://dragcave.net/lineage/T7ep
The page of your 10 most recent mate refusals:  http://dragcave.net/reject

More secret pages used to exist, but were taken down over time for unknown reasons... possibly lost in server changes, possibly TJ got bored of them, possibly lost or broken in coding changes.  WTFBBQCHICKEN was apparently a page at one time, for example, but it is no longer available.

Which holidays does dragcave celebrate or recognize?
It is important to note that T.J. Lipscomb is an American, and therefore his choices among all the possible holidays reflect what a typical American would both celebrate and think of as relatively secular and non-patriotic.  The commercialistic holiday of Christmas is celebrated, but the more religious Easter is not... at least 'not really.'  The very culture-specific Halloween is celebrated, but not the nation-specific Independence Day.
