Venus of Urbino (1538)
Oil on canvas.
"The are many paintings of Venus, and someone may observe that the Titian painting of Venus is a member of the class of Venus paintings. But to know what the Titian painting is like, it is not sufficient for the purpose of aesthetic appreciation to know that it is a Venus painting. One must know what the particular content of the painting is like to appreciate it aesthetically or even to know fully what it is like. It is what this painting is like in the full particularity of the experience of it that is required for aesthetic appreciation."
