Painting

“The Flow of Sensation and Perception” is the title of my series of artworks. I use fluid acrylics and glazing mediums to capture images by painting, pouring, and splattering paint onto canvases. I create mood in my work by using colors to indulge the viewer’s senses. Perception occurs in the interpretation of my realistic, abstracted subject matter, and non-objective works.

Angela's passion is photography with a focus on farm animals. She portrays ordinary animals (cows, pigs, goats and other commonplace animals) to show their real beauty and fun personalities. Having access to her sister's farm in New Boston, MO, she is able to capture the animals in a very genuine, fun and sometimes quirky predicament. Angie says, "The ability of the camera to freeze a moment in time and preserve it for others to view has always intrigued me."

joyce darden

Painter

Joyce was born and raised in Lewiston, Maine, then moved to Nashville in the 60's and resided there for approximately 40 years working as a legal secretary.  After retiring from the legal field, and in order to get away from the fast lane of Nashville, she moved to a little town called Hohenwald, TN, where she has been residing since 2000.  Having always loved art (in any and all forms), she began painting classes sometime in '01/'02 and has continued to paint on her own (taking classes intermittently).  She is constantly discovering our world, filled with color and form, and interpret the beauty of what her eyes see. For her, painting is a way for her spirit to be free while her brush forms images in color which never ceases to amaze her.

Susan Estes DeGarmo

Altered Books, Fine Art

After 27 years in graphic design, Susan has begun to branch out into other areas of creativity. An Assistant Professor at O'More College of Design, her students wanted more of a hands-on type of class instead of always being on the computer. She had an interest in altered books and decided that was the class she wanted to teach and the students loved it and so did she.

Susan had always been an illustrator... greeting cards for DaySpring, illustrations for Memphis Magazine... but had never painted. She began painting when a friend double-dog-dared her to paint a portrait of her son. She did and her friend loved it. So began her painting career.

Born in Mississippi, she became amazed at the beauty of the Southern Magnolias. This sparked her interest so then she started to research and photograph other species native to her home state. In 1990, she enrolled in the Bob Ross Certification Program at the Murfreesboro, TN campus.  She became a certified instructor in Landscape and Floral techniques.  After which, she enrolled at the New Smyrna Beach, Florida campus and completed her certification in Wildlife and Portrait. Anne Goetze

Painting and Photography

Anne Goetze has documented a certain pocket of middle Tennessee, Leiper’s Fork, for over fifteen years with her paintings and photographs. The radius of her beloved country has become smaller as suburban sprawl is now in full swing. Like her artistic mentor Dorothea Lange, who documented the farms and people of the Depression Era, Goetze also starts her work as an assignment and develops a series of visual images. As land continues to disappear she feels an urgency to preserve it. “We are all called to be good stewards of the land. It demands our respect and care. We are all dependent on it… mankind is a species also, and therefore it is the land that governs our sustenance.”

Melanie Jackson - Melanie Jackson Art

Oil, graphite & colored pencil

“Art is part of who I am as a person and what goes on in the midst of my everyday life. I am motivated by a desire to develop the gifts that God has given me, to encourage others to do the same, and to create art that brings peace to the viewer. My current exhibit, titled My Tennessee is representative of the world just outside my door. Originally from Texas, I have lived in the Franklin area for over 25 years. The lush foliage and fauna, the rivers and lakes are such an inspiration. Don’t think I shall ever tire of painting and drawing Tennessee.”

Melanie studied with Charles Brindley, and at Watkins Art Institute. She is represented in private collections in the U.S. and abroad. The Tennessee State Museum purchased two of her drawings for their collection. Recently, one of her drawing classes was filmed for a Belgium Television Show for troubled teens.

Stellasue Lee
Poet

Stellasue Lee's work comes from a place deep within. Her poems explore the human experience in accessible images and moments.  Yusef Komunyakka said of her work, “Reading Stellasue’s poems take us to a sense of place, to loved ones by way of sharp turns and hair-pin curves. I believe and trust her voices captured in these poems that drive us toward the vortex of what matters.”  Twice an entrant for the Pulitzer Prize, she has been published in numerous literary journals.

Poetry is a form that enables her to understand the inner core of her life.  It permits an uncritical gaze that changes the course of her thinking. She is known to ask her new students “Seize your critic by the scruff of the neck, and lock him up.” She believes that’s where her critic belongs as well, locked away.

Mike Martino ~ Blue Fig Editions
Printmaker / Studio and Workshops

Mike Martino is a Nashville based artist who has been working in the printmaking medium for over 25 years. Mike has mastered many printing techniques to where he uses a variety of traditional and modern techniques to create his own unique style of hand pulled prints. Mike's work is driven from noticing images he sees in his daily life. They are often nuances that are simple observations; like the angle of a book on a table, the texture of tree bark, color of grass at sunset. He collects these images in his sketch book and adds notes to them much like a dictionary of images to be used in future artwork. When Mike starts on a piece of artwork he pulls from his "dictionary" along with his memory to create his images. His works vary from landscape & still life's to abstract space-scapes. Mike builds his composition as well as crops his images to limit the view and suggest more is going on. Suggesting to the viewer to continue the narrative story with their imagination. His work often includes monoprints making each a unique image. Mike creates prints that are a marriage of creative artistic elements and the printmaking process elements.

Judy Mowery

Artist/Painter

I have been oil painting for the last four years, off and on.  I like landscapes, still life and have recently been working on people.  I have not ventured into any shows at this point but hope to in the near future.  My husband and I are retired from the restaurant business and enjoy entertaining.  I also enjoy gardening and have used my creative talents to create a wonderful backyard retreat which we thoroughly are enjoying.

Dawn Neumann ~ Dawn Ellen Designs

Handcrafted Jewelry

Fused glass, lampwork beads, stones and minerals, pearls, crystal and other components form the architecture of “wearable art” in handcrafted jewelry that I make. Metal smith work and wire wrapping in gold filled wire and sterling silver wire provide texture and polish to highlight the uniqueness of each piece.

My studio is located in Fairview, TN, about 25 miles west of Nashville. You can see a variety of my work at my website. I teach classes in lapidary, glass fusing, wire wrapping, silver smith work, and design. I can travel to your place for classes, or you can come to my well-equipped studio. Classes by appointment (615) 799-9959.

Randy L Purcell ~ Creative Artist

Paintings and Mixed Media

My creations represent; fragments of dreams, memories, and my imagination. I have collected these thoughts in sketchbooks and journals for several years. While these simple drawings or short stories mean little to others, in my mind they reflect my life’s experiences. To share these interest and experiences I make Art using the materials that I feel best communicate my vision of a particular moment or place.

Veera Rajaratnam

Artist

Veera Rajaratnam has been a Franklin resident since 2000-her artwork was first displayed in 2003 Spring Semester Fine Arts Recital, at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine while she was a faculty there.   Her painting titled “Devotion” was a favorite at the 2010 “ENCORE” art event held by the Steinway Pianos and ACWC.  Currently, a scientific editor she continues to exhibit her creative work as an artist, poet, photographer and a faith writer.   Veera says “Painting is a collective emulation of my heart, mind and soul rejoicing in the goodness of God’s creations- nature, people and the world around us.”

She works mostly on canvas, usually freehand and spontaneous with oil, pastel, acrylic, colored pencils and mixed media, bringing out the images from within.  She signs her artwork “VeerajaR” –a condensed version of her long name-she says.

Jennie Schut ~ Fly Forward

Oil Painting, Mixed Media, Encaustic, Bookmaking

As a painter, I perceive that there are many relationships active in a good piece of work, such as light and dark, smooth and rough, colorful and dull, space and illusion of space, abstract and concrete. These relationships exist to portray contrasts and diversity, without which, artwork would be boring and flat. This could be said of life as well.  And it is in these relationships perhaps, that we find those transitory, beautiful spaces in which the dichotomy of contentious opposites are found flourishing peacefully, inhabiting a minute corner of the world for a transient instant.

There is also another leg to my work besides that of a working artist.  I have written a book entitled Waking Up Grey: An Exploration of Creative Awakening, in which I take the reader on a journey of more heightened awareness of their potential to create.  This is an 11-week look at the creative life and it includes journaling, creative experiments and spiritual exercises to recover lost creativity.  I do groups and retreats centered around the creative recovery process.

Signature "Maru"

Every blank canvas is a puzzle, a puzzle to be solved because you have the idea in your mind. All the colors, the composition, the depth, the technique - it all sits in your mind. . . and then! It happens, it doesn't happen. It is just like a puzzle being put together - that color worked, that one didn't. And so you keep working the puzzle until it comes together.

Norb Skalski ~ Art Inc

Artist

Norb's work is driven by the core of human existence, emotion, and it's external presence. He's sees himself as a social critic who has developed expressionistic style in the context of Van Gogh, Picasso, as well as such abstract expressionists as Nolde, Kirschner and Munch.

Primarily interested in figurative art composition, he has always avoided easy moralistic judgements, preferring to explore primal human characteristics that become apparent to the viewer only after he or she has spent ample time considering them.

The artist’s preferred medium, a holdover from his academic past, accounts for the crisp detail in his whimsical drawings.
