Documenting the City: Art and Society in Newport explores the visual representation of Newport and its region from the eighteenth century to the present. We also explore the art world of Newport, with particular reference to the history of the Newport College of Art.
Documenting the City: Art and Society in Newport provides a unique perspective upon the making of modern Newport. We trace the evolution of the modern city from the turbulent origins of frontier industrialism and Chartism, through the change and challenges of the twentieth century, to the current prospects of the new entrepreneurial City of Newport. We may say that Newport has risen to the challenge of modernity across the generations with a passion and a vision all of its own. / Read more: Essays
