DTES Street Market Network/Outreach

posted Sep 21, 2014, 9:34 PM by Artful Communities   [ updated Sep 22, 2014, 4:37 PM ]

Today, September 21st, one of the final days of summer, Rachel, Allison, and Phillip took a walk down to the DTES Street Market which takes place every Sunday in Pigeon Park.  This Sunday was especially valuable for our outreach team to attend, as today was the opening of the Greenway Gallery.  This portable Gallery showcased DTES artist's 10' x 6' murals along Carrall Street. We each talked to the various artists showcasing their talent. We signed up three artists for our OUTSIDE/IN Sponsor an Artist Project at the market, as well as handing out a few notebooks to those who said they would use them.

Launching OUTSIDE / IN Project, September 30th 2014

We are proud to announce the launch of our first collaborative project, OUTSIDE / IN, starting September 30th 2014.

Our community is full of creative potential, artists on the margins who eagerly crave the opportunity to transform their lives and communities. They hold artful ambitions, and lack only the most basic resources to fulfill their visions.

We have reached out to homeless artists in the Downtown Eastside, Commercial Drive, and Granville areas, signing up 25 who wish to seek sponsorship to bring their ideas to the world.

Now we offer all of you the opportunity to learn their stories, connect with their artwork, and witness the transformative power of art in the lives and communities of homeless artists.

The Project

Our first project offers a vision of what the world could become if it were turned "outside/in".  We aim to empower 25 homeless artists to transform their lives and communities through art. Each artist is receiving personal support to overcome their current barriers, clarify their visions, and create a sustainable plan to bring their artwork and message to the world.

We are supporting this process by hosting:
  • An online crowd-funding campaign
  • Community fundraising events
  • An online Etsy store

The Film

This project is being documented in a film, Produced by Mandip Sandhu of Sand Dune Films, in collaboration with Cinematographers Caroline Trudel and John Vis. The final film will be shown at our Showcase Event in December, and will feature the lives, artwork, and transformations of those helped.
