The AHGC has awarded academic scholarships to 23 outstanding students since 2003. Each year the Garden Club tries to award at least one $1500 academic scholarship to assist local students. Applications are available at the bottom of this page in January and are due on May 1st, with recipients announced by mid-June. Primary consideration is given to applicants pursuing study in the fields of landscape architecture, horticulture, botany, forestry, agriculture, marine biology and environmental science. However, other fields of interest will be given consideration if the applicant can demonstrate working experience in the horticulture/floral/nursery community. Applicants must be residents of Arlington Heights or adjoining communities.
Personal Development Award (For Club Members Only - new in 2012)
The personal development award has been added to the program to encourage gardening and horticultural training and assist with the class cost to our club members. Awards shall be for 50% of class or program registration/tuition with a maximum of $200 per grant per application. Only one award per year per individual shall be granted. Personal Development applications may be submitted at any time throughout the year.
Proceeds from the annual Garden Walk are used to fund scholarship and club activities.

The first Personal Development Award has been given to Jenifer Richardson to assist her in taking the Master Gardener program offered by the U of I Extension Division. This award provides financial assistance for 50% of the class fee.
Jennifer Richardson , AHGC -- $200 Personal Development Award
One outstanding student has been awarded an academic scholarship for the last three years for her proven record of continuing achievement. We wish her well in her college experiences as she pursues her career goals.
Kelly Kowal, Arlington Heights, IL -- $1500 Scholarship for 2012, 2013 and 2014
Kelly has is going into her third year of college at the University of Wisconsin –Platteville, with a 3.6 GPA. She is pursuing an Agricultural Business /Communications & Marketing curriculum. She realizes that many doors of opportunity can be opened with an agricultural major, whether studying prices for new genetically modified corn or figuring out how the cold weather will affect vegetable prices.
Kelly has been working very hard and is in the upper 20% of her class. She is also involved in several extracurricular programs, CERES, Ag Business Club and various volunteer opportunities with St. Thomas of Villanova Parish and making blankets for Northwest Community Hospital well as her summer job at Knupper's.
This scholarship will, again, assist her with the cost of her education for the upcoming school year and allow her to continue to focus on her studies.
