Since that time Ark House has grown to become an independent, nonprofit organization involving dozens of Dallas area volunteers. There are now twenty-one fully furnished one-bedroom apartments that volunteers manage and maintain. In addition, the Shepherd Program offers Ark House residents a local contact person who offers friendship and support throughout their stay.
Ark House began in 1985 as a project of the Ark Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church Richardson. The class rented and furnished an apartment to provide a safe haven for a family unable to return to their own home while specialized medical care was being provided at a Dallas hospital.
