An Epitome of Sacrifice
Dr Arjuna Sathiaseelan is a Senior Research Associate at the Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge. Along with Prof. Jon Crowcroft he leads work on LCD-Net: Lowest Cost Denominator Networking, a new Internet paradigm that would enable free Internet access to all. The work is cross-discplinary: cross cutting Computer Science, Social Science, Economics, Legal and Policy Research.
He is currently coordinating the EPSRC funded "PAWS: Public Access WiFi Service" project which aims to utilise the unused capacity at home broadband networks to provide free Internet access to all to access essential services. The project has several partners: Horizon Digital Economy Research Institute, Rural Digital Economy Hub. BT, SamKnows, Nottingham City Council and the Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
His research is particularly focussed on
(1) Engineering technologies to support new access methods that would allow free Internet connectivity to enable social inclusion.
(2) Shaping the Future Internet agenda to include technologies that would allow the Internet to be universally accessible.
(3) Leveraging the power of the Internet, Mobile systems and social computing to enable health care, education, poverty alleviation and empowerment.
His other activities include architecting the Future Internet, enabling quad-play (voice, video, data, mobility) convergence, mobile systems especially inter-RAT mobility and Internet of Things. He has also co-authored and contributed to several Internet standards and drafts (IETF) and contributed to the DVB-RCS2 standardization at the ETSI TM-RCS.
In the past he was a Research Fellow in Connected Digital Economy at University of Aberdeen. He was also an Associate and Convener for the ICT4D group with the Center for Sustainable International Development (CSID) at Aberdeen, where he conducted cross-disciplinary research to look at ICT solutions for International Development. He was also the Chief Evangelist @ United Mobile Apps Pvt LTD, India.
