Gabriel Abbott was a Lebanese immigrant who came to America in 1917. He had chosen a different path than most other Lebanese immigrants. He chose to not start a business but to start a farm in Florida, a town on the Mohawk trail right outside of North Adams. On his farm he grew the famous Florida Mountain Turnips. He trucked his vegetables to North Adams daily and sold them to make money. Later on, he had decided to sell his land so that a school could be built. The school was then named in his honor. Gabriel Abbott Memorial School.
