A new paperback edition of Lois Lowry’s Newbery Award–winning classic.
As the German troops begin their campaign to “relocate” all the Jews of Denmark, Annemarie Johansen’s family takes in Annemarie’s best friend, Ellen Rosen, and conceals her as part of the family.
Through the eyes of ten-year-old Annemarie, we watch as the Danish Resistance smuggles almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark, nearly seven thousand people, across the sea to Sweden. The heroism of an entire nation reminds us that there was pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and war.
With a new introduction by the author.

The evacuation of Jews from Nazi-held Denmark is one of the great untold stories of World War II. On September 29, 1943, word got out in Denmark that Jews were to be detained and then sent to the death camps. Within hours the Danish resistance, population and police arranged a small flotilla to herd 7,000 Jews to Sweden. Lois Lowry fictionalizes a true-story account to bring this courageous tale to life. She brings the experience to life through the eyes of 10-year-old Annemarie Johannesen, whose family harbors her best friend, Ellen Rosen, on the eve of the round-up and helps smuggles Ellen's family out of the country. Number the Stars won the 1990 Newbery Medal.

TV Shows We Used To Watch - 1964-2006 BBC Top of the Pops
Top Of The Pops shimmied onto our TV screens on New Year's Day 1964, armed with hordes of a scary new faction called 'young people' and presented by cigar-chomping tracksuit-model Jimmy Savile (although he was relatively normal back then). If that wasn't enough to scare the bejesus out of parents across the nation, the show was shot live, and in its first edition featured such greats as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield and the Hollies. Top of the Pops, also known as TOTP, is a British music chart television programme, made by the BBC and originally broadcast weekly from 1 January 1964 to 30 July 2006. It was traditionally shown every Thursday evening on BBC One, before being moved to Fridays in 1996, and then moved to Sundays on BBC Two in 2005. Each weekly programme consisted of performances from some of that week's best-selling popular music artists, with a rundown of that week's singles chart. Additionally, every year there was a special edition of the programme on Christmas Day featuring some of the best-selling singles of the year. Although the weekly show was cancelled, the Christmas special has continued. It was also survived by Top of the Pops 2, which began in 1994 and featured vintage performances from the Top of the Pops archives. In the 1990s, the show's format was sold to several foreign broadcasters in the form of a franchise package, and at one point various versions of the show were shown in nearly 100 countries. At the moment, a local version of TOTP is still regularly running in Italy on Rai 2. Top of the Pops began on New Year's Day 1964 in Studio A on Dickenson Road in Rusholme, Manchester, which the BBC had bought from Mancunian Films in 1954. DJ Jimmy Savile presented the first show, which featured (in order) The Rolling Stones with "I Wanna Be Your Man", Dusty Springfield with "I Only Want to Be with You", the Dave Clark Five with "Glad All Over", The Hollies with "Stay", The Swinging Blue Jeans with "Hippy Hippy Shake" and The Beatles with "I Want to Hold Your Hand", that week's number one (throughout its history, the programme always finished with the best-selling single of the week). For the first three years Savile rotated with three other presenters: Alan Freeman, Pete Murray and David Jacobs. A Mancunian model, Samantha Juste, was the regular "disc girl". The magnificent, ethereal blossom of a Nightblooming Cereus
The magnificent, ethereal blossom of a Nightblooming Cereus
Explore Jul 13, 2011 #56 Hard to believe this delicate etheric flower is the ultimate work of a usually inconspicuous cactus. I wired 3 18" long pieces onto the tree in front of our home when we first moved in. And now the cactus has woven its way all through the tree and now suddenly... usually after a heavy rain... it blooms in profusion, attracting swarms of hummingbirds to savor its nectar. This flower is 12 inches across! Several evenings when dinner guest were leaving and we opened our front door to escort them into the courtyard, we were greeted with dozens of these ephemeral blossoms that had opened as we were savoring a delicious meal! Quite an exotic dessert! Nightblooming Cereus is the common name of a large number of flowering Cereus cacti that bloom at night. Because of the short life of the flowers, the Nightblooming Cereus has a romanticized reputation and has given rise to erroneous beliefs, such as that the plants bloom only once a year, or only on nights when the moon is full. It is also referred to as Princess of the Night, Honolulu Queen (for Hylocereus undatus, commonly grown in Hawaii), Queen of the Night, or Reina de la Noche. This cactus does not grow in the ground. It gets longer and longer and winds its way through trees, along walls and fences. The stem is about 1 1/2 wide, flattened on three sides edged in curving thorns. Night blooming Cereus flowers are almost always white, often large, and frequently fragrant. Most of the flowers open after nightfall, and by dawn most are in the process of wilting. The plants that bear such flowers can be tall, columnar, and sometimes extremely large and tree-like, but more frequently are thin-stemmed climbers. While some nightblooming Cereus are grown indoors in homes or greenhouses in colder climates, most of these plants are too large or ungainly for this treatment, and are only found outdoors in tropical areas.
