Charles Ingalls and his family homesteaded near DeSmet, SD in 1880. My great grandparents, Ole and Petra Haavi, homesteaded my land in 1876, and my family has been here ever since. They probably shared many similar experiences during their pioneer lives. Sometimes I think I would have been a sturdy little pioneer, but when the wind, cold, or grasshoppers force me to drive to the mailbox, I change my mind. The pioneers were an admirable group, though I often wonder what on earth they were thinking as they headed west. I am continually thankful they came, stayed, and put my house on high land.
