The first time I drove the Dempster Highway north of Dawson City, Yukon, I was caught in the first winter snowstorm... in late August. This is early, even for the north. I toughed it out in my tent for a few days, then realizing that it wasn't going to stop anytime soon, decided to make a run for it. Summer tires... old, old car... the only other vehicles on the road were long distance truckers, heading north, and they were giving me thumbs up as we passed. I made it out by the skin of my teeth. In subsequent years I have camped up there as late as mid-September, without experiencing anything remotely like this. But it's always in the back of my mind... That's a CATERPILLAR 797B Haul Truck lumbering across the road in front of us. Each of its six tires is over 13 feet tall. The 24-cylinder engine develops 3,550 hp, allowing the truck to move up to 340 tons (380 short tons) of material.
