Presenters: Peter Weismantle
This lecture is part of the FPE course, Performance-Based Design taught by Professor Brian Meacham, but is open to all WPI students, faculty and alumni who have an interest in hearing about challenges associated with designing fire and life safety systems for the world’s tallest buildings, including Burj Khalifa in Dubai, currently the world’s tallest building, and Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which when completed, will be the world’s tallest building.
In his lecture, Mr. Weismantle will discuss the trends in Globalization, Urbanization and Sustainability as well as the factors of Ambition and Ego that are driving humanity to reach for new heights in a veritable explosion of supertall building construction. His presentation will also cover approaches that design professionals have taken to investigate the special nature of these supertall structures. Then, starting with the regulatory framework of Codes and Standards, how design professionals have developed various enhanced aspects of protection that these special structures require.
