Using Polarizing Filter

    polarizing filter
  • The polarizing filter used with most modern cameras is a circular polarizer. The first stage of the polarizer is a linear filter which filters out light that is linearly polarized in a specific direction.
  • A common filter that removes reflections from water, glass and other surfaces, it also increases colour saturation.
  • A photographic or optical filter that polarizes the light passing through it, used chiefly for reducing reflections and improving contrast. Two polarizing filters are often used together, such that rotation of one of them results in a neutral density filter of variable density
  • (polarizing filters) Used on camera lenses to selectively remove excess light.

1.25" Orion Variable Polarizing Filter
This versatile filter acts like a dimmer switch for your telescope, toning down the brightness of the Moon or planets to a level that is comfortable. The reduction in brightness and glare unmasks detail in your viewing subject and greatly improves contrast. The filter consists of two high-grade glass polarizing filters in a rotating cell that allows you to adjust the amount of light transmission from 1% to 40%. Such control is highly desirable for lunar observing because the Moon's brightness varies with its phase. The filter is great for terrestrial observing too, especially on sunny days. The filter has an anodized aluminum cell, which threads into the barrel of any standard eyepiece. Now available in 1.25" and 2" sizes. Storage case included.

These two images are from a test that I conducted with a cheap piece of polarized film, in order to test what I read in photography books about the benefits of using a polarizing filter.

I obtained my filter from a pair of paper 3D glasses that I got as a sample from the American Paper Optics company booth at Siggraph 2002 in San Antonio. I cut the glasses in half, and dissoved the paper with water, and then dissolved the glue with Elmer's "Sticky Out."

I held the filter in front of my tripod-mounted Vivitar 3 Megapixel, Fixed-focus, point and shoot camera. In one orientation the reflections from the glass on my poster are able to pass through, and obscure the photograph in the frame. In a different orientation the reflection is substantially subdued. The light blocked or absorbed by the polarizer never reaches the light meter built into the small digital camera, and it therefore automatically sets a longer exposure to compensate.

Third of a series of six images taken of a display at the @ Bristol science experience in Bristol, England. The display showed a sheet of ice forming through polarising viewers. I instead used my polarising filter to get the same effect. The six images are in sequence as I rotated my filter. Try hitting "L" and scrolling through the six images using the arrow keys.
