Renaming an iPod, iPhone, iPad or Mac

Back to:

This article is a walkthrough for renaming your iPhone, iPod or iPad. If you own an iOS device (iPod touch, iPhone or iPad), this can be done right on the device. You can also choose to rename it in iTunes.

Renaming in iTunes
In order to rename the device in iTunes, the device will need to be plugged in to a computer with iTunes on it, and iTunes will need to be launched. If the device has been connected with no problem, it should appear under "DEVICES" in the left column. If you do not see the sidebar on the left, see: iTunes 11: Show Sidebar and Status Bar.

In the above example, the device's name is "iPhone 4S." If you double-click on the name of your device, you will be able to type in the name that you want.

The name of the device will appear in places like Find my iPhone, or if you have a Mac, applications like iPhoto and iMovie. If your device has any form of sharing turned on, or other devices are trying to connect to yours (through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.), your device's name will show up there as well.

Renaming on an iOS Device
Of course you can choose to rename the device in iTunes if you like, but there is an alternative method if you own an iPod touch, iPhone or iPad. The name can be changed under the Settings app on the device. In Settings, tap on the General menu. Next, tap on "About." The option at the very top will display the name of the device. Tap on this, and a keyboard will appear, allowing you to edit the name of your device.

Any changes made to the device will automatically be updated in iTunes as well, in addition to any other place your device's name may appear. There is no need to also rename it in iTunes if it has already been renamed on the device.

Renaming a Mac
Renaming a Mac is done in System Preferences, which is the gear icon on your Mac (or a light switch with the Apple logo in Mac OS X Tiger and earlier). After System Preferences is launched, go to the Sharing menu, under the Internet & Wireless section.

After clicking on "Sharing," there will be a field to enter your computer name at the top of the page:
Press return (enter) to save your changes. The "Edit" button is used to change the name of what your computer will be displayed as on others' computers for sharing over the network. By default, it is Your-Computer-Name.local.
