iOS 6.1 is Out

iOS 6.1 is Out
Posted January 28th, 2013

Today, Monday, Apple released iOS 6.1 to the public. This update is compatible with all the same devices as the initial iOS 6.0 update. We wanted to clear up any confusion, since iOS 6.0.2 was only available for the iPhone 5 and iPad mini (as it addressed a Wi-Fi bug that only affected those devices). iOS 6.1 compatibility would include:
  • iPhone
    • iPhone 3GS
    • iPhone 4
    • iPhone 4S
    • iPhone 5
  • iPod touch
    • iPod touch (4th generation)
    • iPod touch (5th generation)
  • iPad
    • iPad 2
    • iPad (3rd generation)
    • iPad (4th generation)
    • iPad mini

This update offers some enhancements and minor fixes. There are four notable improvements.
One, you can now purchase movie tickets through Siri if you have the Fandango app installed (and if not, it will offer to install it). If you ask her what movies are playing, and select a movie, at the bottom it should show you what times that movie is playing and where. Tap on this, select a theater and a time, and there should be a Fandango link. An example on an iPad mini is shown below:

Another notable feature is that those of you who subscribe to iTunes Match can now download individual songs from iCloud, rather than just the whole bunch.

Lastly, an option to reset the Advertising Identifier has been added. You are probably wondering, "What is that?"

The below information can be found under Settings > General > About > Advertising.
Ad Tracking

iOS 6 introduces the Advertising Identifier, a non-permanent, non-personal, device identifier, that apps will use to give you more control over advertisers' ability to use tracking methods. You can reset a device's Advertising Identifier at any time. And, if you choose to limit ad tracking, apps are not permitted to use the Advertising Identifier to serve you targeted ads. In the future all apps will be required to use the Advertising Identifier. However, until then you may still receive targeted ads.
Lastly, the music controls have a new look. These are the controls that appear on your lock screen upon double tapping the home button and allow you to adjust the volume or play/pause music right from the lock screen.

Old Look:                                                                   New Look:

Also notable is the new support for LTE on 36 additional carriers in various countries.

iOS 6.1 is a substantial update. Keeping an up-to-date operating system is important, and we hope you will enjoy the new feature introduced in the latest update.
