NCOF and HYCOM CICE Arctic Sea Ice Thickness 2013

Sea Ice Thickness - NCOF

Sea Ice Thickness Imagery from NCOF, GHRRST on Godiva 2. The UK Met has  been using the Louvaine le Neuve Ice Model (LIM), developed in Belgium until January, 2013. The base ice thickness model changed to the Los Alamos CICE model as modified by the UK Met on January 16, 2013.

Further response from the UK Met. NCOF in regard ice thickness, leads to their initial conclusion that model below is too thin.

"The ice is too thin in our model, but the NRL output on your page looks pretty sensible for this time of year. Although both systems use the CICE ice model, they will be configured differently, and they also use different ocean models under the ice and different data assimilation schemes. We assimilate ice concentration observations, but at present this has a side-effect of reducing the ice thickness. The reasons for this are under investigation."

However, comparison of NOCF ice thickness to the gridded PIOMAS ice thickness data seems to generally support the NCOF thicknesses. See Chris Reynolds work at dosbat: http://dosbat.blogspot.com/2013/01/piomas-gridded-data-2012-is-here.html
