The Protestant Reformation shatters the veneer of European religious unity, exposing, and in some cases exacerbating long standing dynastic feuds, social grievances, and regional rivalries.  In response to the grip that the Church and the Holy Roman Empire had, many Protestants formulated theories of resistance that will have a great impact later on more secular reform movements.  Follow this link and read the various arguments of these Protestant thinkers.
