Lincoln Park, N.J. was a fitting location to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day that afforded the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers an opportunity to showcase its continued commitment to wetlands restoration. Hudson County's Lincoln Park encompasses recreation fields and other facilities. A 35-acre wetland portion of the site along the Hackensack River is being restored by the Corps from a degraded salt marsh that was used as part of a landfill to a functioning tidal wetland. At the April 22 event were U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and members of his staff; the Army Corps’ New York District Commander Col. John R. Boule II, and members of his staff; The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey; representatives from NOAA, NJDEP, Hudson County; and Green Construction Company, the construction contractor. The wetland restoration project involves restoring the areas native salt marsh, improving the ecological health of the Hackensack River ecosystem and increasing public access. The Corps is using clean sand from its Anchorage shipping channel dredging project to restore 35 acres of wetland, 11 acres of transition area and to create 4,500 linear feet of tidally flowed creeks.
