Lantana (Lantana camara) (see below for pic) is a tough evergreen shrub with an unpleasant aroma. Stems and leaves are rough in texture and covered with hairs. It can grow in full sun and semi-shade. Lantana requires well-drained soil and can tolerate drought. Propagation is by seed or cuttings.

Lantana is used as a diaphoretic, carminative and stimulant. It is also considered as a remedy for sprains and respiratory diseases.

every kid in the colony has grown up playing with this!

Silver Cockscomb

Common name: Silver Cockscomb, Flamingo Feathers,

Wheat Celosia • Marathi: कुरडू Kurdu
Botanical name: Celosia argentea var. spicata

Family: Amaranthaceae (Amaranth family)
Synonyms: Celosia spicata

Silver cockscombs are erect, branching plants with oval or lance-shaped, strongly veined leaves 2-6 in long and hundreds of tiny flowers packed in dense spikes of silver-white flowers which usually stand above the foliage. They are beautiful plants with soft, dense feathery spikes, produced in profusion. Wonderful straw-like flower when dried. It offers fresh shape and colour to cut flower, or everlasting flower arrangements, with 10-13cm flower spikes on 60cm stems. Slender, cylindrical pink or rose flowerheads have a metallic sheen because the individual flowers are silvery-white at their bases. Excellent as a flowering pot plant. Height 60-75cm.

Common name: Sonkadi • Hindi: बिछलू Bichhloo •

Marathi: सोनकाडी Sonkadi
Botanical name: Pentanema indicum

Family: Asteraceae (Sunflower family)
Synonyms: Inula indica, Vicoa indica

Sonkadi is an erect annual herb, 1-3 ft tall. Stems are branched in the upper part. Branches are cylindrical and leafy. Alternately arranged, oblong-lancelike leaves are stalkless, 3-8 cm long, and hairy. The leaves have rounded "ears" at the base. Yellow flower-heads, 1-2 cm across, occur singly on slender stalks. Ray flowers are 12-24, narrow, 3-toothed at the tip. Disc flowers are yellow. This flower can be easily distinguished from Sonsari by the number of "petals" (ray flowers) in the two.
