Bach's Goldberg variations are underpinned by a bass line: G F# E D B C D G. When I first studied twelve-tone composition, I thought that the first six notes of this eight-note line were a perfectly good beginning for a serial tone row. So I completed the tone row with the other six notes, then composed "abgebacht" using the resulting matrix. It is a strict serial composition, but I was able to bring in a nice melodic line for the second and final variation. The middle is in part a canon. The title, "abgebacht," might be translated into English as "Bached up."  1029k v. 1 Oct 5, 2008, 12:42 PM Anthony Krupp
