Spring 1894 - Detail
Procession of women and children descending marble stairs carry and wear brightly colored flowers. Cheering spectators fill the windows and roof of a classical building. Lawrence Alma Tadema here represented the Victorian custom of sending children into the country to collect flowers on the morning of May 1, or May Day, but placed the scene in ancient Rome. In this way, he suggested the festival's great antiquity through architectural details, dress, sculpture, and even the musical instruments based on Roman originals. Alma Tadema's curiosity about the ancient world was insatiable, and the knowledge he acquired was incorporated into over three hundred paintings of ancient archeological and architectural design. He said: Now if you want to know what those Greeks and Romans looked like, whom you make your masters in language and thought, come to me. For I can show not only what I think but what I know. Alma Tadema's paintings also enjoyed popularity later, when his large panoramic depictions of Greek and Roman life caught the attention of Hollywood. Certain scenes in Cecil B. De Mille's film Cleopatra (1934) were inspired by the painting Spring. The procession is of servants of the Temple of Flora who are celebrating the Roman festival of Cereralia. A verse from Algernon Swinburne's poem, Dedication, appears engraved on the oversized golden frame: In a land of clear colours and stories, In a region of shadowless hours, Where Earth has a garment of glories And a murmur of musical flowers. The setting is imaginary, bringing together architectural details from several sources, including wall paintings from Pompeii in the roundels on the banner, the centauramachy frieze from the Temple at Bassae recycled from A Dedication to Bacchus on the building on the left and a votive plaque beginning with the phrase "Hunc Lucum Tibi Dedico" - 'I dedicate this wood to you'. Carried in the procession are two silver saytr herms, each with an infant Dionysos on his shoulder carrying a liknon, or winnowing basket filled with fruit. One of Tadema's most famous and popular works, it took him four years to complete and involved several reworkings to perfect the union of historical detail and aesthetic composition. The figures inthe procession include the likenesses of numerous friends, family members, and fellow artists including musicians Sir George and Lillian Henschel and their daughter Helen who looks down from the balcony on the right and several instances of his daughters Anna and Laurence in the foreground. Spring currently hangs at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu California, though it is exhibited in the reading room rather than in the main exhibit space.
If I Had My Life to Live Over
I read this poem and pictured a photo for it right away, but since there aren't daisy fields around here, yellow cosmos would have to make do :) If I Had My Life to Live Over (I would pick more daisies) by Nadine Stair I'd dare to make more mistakes next time. I'd relax, i would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been this trip I would take fewer things seriously I would take more chances I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers I would eat more ice cream and less beans I would perhaps have more actual troubles, but I'd have few imaginary ones You see, I'm one of those people who live sensibly and sanely hour after hour, day after day Oh, I've had my moments and if I had it to do over again, I'd have more of them In fact, I'd try to have nothing else Just moments, one after another, instead of livng so many years ahead of each day I've been one of those persons who never goes anywhere without a thermometer, a hot water bottle, a raincoat and a parachute. If I had to do it again, I would travel lighter than I have If i had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall I would go to more dances, I would ride more merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies.
