It is ALWAYS important to see the actual census image.  If YOU DON'T HAVE ANCESTRY and FamilySearch only has the index they are online - it just takes more work to find them.

First get the indexing information from FamilySearch using the links above.  It is usually found at the very bottom of the index page and gives things like Household ID, IMAGE # etc.

Go to THE INTERNET ARCHIVE

in the search box type  1860 census Indiana (or whatever census you want).  All the rolls for the 1860 census of Indiana will come up.

LOOK FOR YOUR COUNTY - it will be part of the BLUE LINK in the rolls and they do not sort alphabetically, unfortunately. When you find your county click on the link Using the IMAGES at the Internet Archive:

click on the little symbol that looks like a rectangle with arrows pointing from the corners - this makes the census go full screen.

FamilySearch should have given you an image number  - if it was image 27 drag the little hand in the bottom left corner till it gets to image 27.  FamilySearch should have given you a household number (numbers to the left of the name on the census).  Sometimes the image number puts you a page or two off but knowing the household number will get you there.
