Metropolis Garden Club


The Metropolis Garden Club meets on the second Monday morning of most months for a business meeting and an interesting gardening presentation.

Metropolis Garden Club Summer 2018 Outings:

June 19, 2018, Tuesday, 9:00 a.m.  Meet at the Metropolis Community Center, 900 West 10th Street, Metropolis, to carpool to the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center, 2289 County Park Drive, Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Directions:  Located within the north portion of the Cape Girardeau County Park, just east of Interstate 55 (Exit 99). Take Kingshighway (State Highway 61) east 0.25 mile of I-55 to the park and nature center.

July 25, 2018, Wednesday, 9:30 a.m.  Meet at the Metropolis Community Center, 900 West 10th Street, Metropolis, to carpool to the Cache River Wetlands Center.  The club will tour the twelve small pollinator gardens planted by local groups including the Metropolis Garden Club.  The themed gardens are along a trail behind the center and include a milkweed garden, a hawkmoth garden, and a mixed native/exotic garden among others.

 August 27,2018, Monday, 9:30 a.m.  Elijah P. Curtis Home, Massac County Historical Museum, 405 Market Street, Metropolis.  Refreshments followed by a program:  History of the Metropolis Garden Club by Club Historian Amy Morgan. Lecture and scrapbooks for perusal by club members.  Tour of the Curtis Home herb and perennial gardens and tour of Club Secretary Shirley Dishinger’s gardens (514 Metropolis Street).

 We have many ongoing projects, which include landscaping for the Massac County Courthouse grounds and around the flagpole at the Metropolis Library, planting at the Veterans Park and at the Blue Star Marker near I-24, planting and maintaining an herb garden at the Curtis Home, wrapping trees for 3rd graders for Arbor Day, providing garden therapy activities at area nursing homes, providing floral arrangements for the Metropolis Library during National Garden Week, decorating the Curtis Home at Christmas, luncheons, garden tours, plant sales, and more.
