At the Heimdallson's. In attendance: six adults and four kids. Discussed were the camping event in August, outhouses, and building options, along with site preparation requirements and work parties; and what we'll need to do to get fighters authorized and to get marshals up here. Mikhail showed off some very cheap leather-working tools he got from amazon.ca; search for "leather tools" or "leather-working tools"; for things like waxed thread, needles, awls of various types, and leather stamps, they are a lot cheaper than Tandy's and most seem to have free shipping, although of course there's a delay while it gets sent. Still, a collection of around ten or more leather stamps for the same price as one at Tandy's, or ten times the length of waxed thread for slightly less than a spool there, is definitely worth checking out if you're looking at doing some leather-work. Note the .ca URL ending and avoid poor exchange rates.

Freydis has repaired her shoes, replacing the original white waxed cotton thread (dental floss) with a nice medium-weight brown thread that matches the leather better. Rather than replacing the entire sole, she made a patch for the one with a hole in it, shaving down the edges for a smooth transition. She filled in the actual hole a bit with contact cement and the leather shavings, leaving a finish now that can barely be seen. She was very pleased with the result.

Ulrich showed us some videos in German (which he was good enough to translate) of a group in Germany who are building a small Medieval city. It's a neat layout; the streets are deliberately a bit windy so you cannot see from one end to the other, to make it feel larger than it is. The structures are really neat, and led to a discussion of a possible roofed shelter being built near the fire pit in his field. The fire pit will be one of the first things constructed after the field is ploughed (using rocks picked from the field), so we can finish each work party with a fire and probably hot dogs and such. People who help out with the work parties will have the option of setting up for the event and camping there a day early.

Also discussed in a small way were trailers and workshops.

A reminder about the table being set up at the mall this Saturday (Feb. 13) from noon 'til five; come in garb to introduce people to the SCA and announce our presence.

The meeting next week will also not be at Sobey's (the next one there is March 2nd); location TBA.
