NYSW 2062: Ex-TPW 2062/TPW 2010/ATSF 3040/ATSF 3140/ATSF 1140 This particular railyard is a microcosm of the railway history of the northeast United States. Binghamton was once an industrial city, and as such was a railway hub. It was served by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western (DL&W), familiarly known as the "The Lackawanna" or "The Route of Anthracite" and "The Route of the Phoebe Snow" (which was the name of a train long before it was adopted by a pop singer). The Lackawanna's western terminus was Buffalo, NY. Binghamton was also served by the Erie Railroad, on its route from New York/New Jersey to Chicago. The Delaware and Hudson (D&H) was the third major railroad that once served Binghamton. In the 1960s, the Lackawanna merged with the Erie Railroad to form the Erie Lackawanna (EL). The combined company, perennially near bankruptcy, continued to serveBinghamton. Later still, the EL joined Conrail, the collection of bankrupt railroads that was put together by the US government to preserve rail service in the northeast. The D&H went broke, too, and for a while was operated by the New York Susquehanna and Western (NYSW). However, the D&H was eventually sold to the Canadian Pacific, which now operates the remaining D&H lines. In the meantime, Conrail went about improving service, rationalizing excess lines, and actually began to make money. The mandate for Conrail was that upon becoming a profitable enterprise, it would be sold to private investors. In the end, Conrail was divided into 2 major parts--sold to CSX and NS--and a 3rd, small portion that operates joint switching services in major industrial areas. Some of Conrail's lines weren't wanted by either CSX or NS. Among these was the former Erie Lackawanna mainline from the New York City area to Chicago. Some of the line, particularly the parts in Ohio and Indiana, was then taken out of service and abandoned. But other parts still exist. One of the remaining former EL lines is the "Southern Tier" from Binghamton NY west to Meadville, Pennsylvania. The State of New York sought its preservation to lessen the effect of what would otherwise be a CSX monopoly on long-haul rail freight services in the state. In Binghamton, the "Southern Tier" is operated by NS, which accounts for the presence of NS 5055 in the yard and in this photograph. The NYSW operated the former EL mainline east of Binghamton, and another line north from Binghamton that serves Utica, NY. Currently, there's no rail passenger service to Binghamton. The closest that Amtrak comes to the city is its NY-Albany-Buffalo-Cleveland-Toledo-Chicago (and the Boston-Albany extension) on the CSX, ex-Conrail, ex-PC, ex-NYC mainline, a considerable distance north of BInghamton. Metro North, the NYC metropolitan commuter tranportation agency, serves Port Jervis, New Jersey, many miles to the east. According to some media, Metro North and/or Amtrak are considering re-establishing service to Binghamton.
