    Saturday Fiction Critique Group: Intermediate/Advanced

    Eager for stimulating feedback from an experienced teacher and fellow writers?  This juried workshop offers detailed, practical group critiques for writers working on short fiction or novels.  The small size guarantees personalized attention to your writing project. Limit: 3-5 writers. To apply for consideration: Submit 3 pages from a work-in-progress, and a short one-paragraph bio (include experience in writing courses & workshops--online or face-to-face--and/or publications) to ajrydell@wisc.edu.  Feel free to email me for more details. (This group will be offered in spring/summer/fall/winter sessions.) When: summer sessions: July 16th, Aug 6th,  2:00-4:30 pm. Where: Angela's house, 217 E Sunset Ct, Madison, WI; Cost: $85/meeting.

    Electrify Your Writing: Flash Fiction Workshop, July Session

    Discover tricks of a genre that begins with a jolt, surges with powerful language, & ends in a high-voltage burst. For writers who want to tell a little story with big impact. When: Final meeting this summer, Tuesday, July 26th, from 6:00 pm-8:30 pm.  Topic - “Point of view in flash fiction.” Includes craft discussions, in-class & out-of-class writing prompts, & optional peer critiques of one story/writer (up to 750 words).     All-Genre Evening Writing Group

    Want to recharge your writing, fill pages, and become a member of a writing community? Come write in a supportive atmosphere, spark ideas for your fiction, creative non-fiction or poetry, and build a writing routine both in class and out. Includes weekly craft discussions and group critique. All genres and levels welcome. When: Wed., July 13, 20, 27, 6:15-8:15 pm. Where: Pyle Center. Cost: $135. Limit: 12.

     

    Originality and Influence: Finding Your Voice on the Page

    Your writing should have as much personality as your characters--and you. Yet “finding” voice challenges many writers—it’s located somewhere between character and narrator, word choice and attitude. It’s both unique to you and influenced by beloved writers. Together we’ll explore how strong voices welcome audience, make every word count, deliver memorable writing, and build a relationship with devoted readers. All genres and levels welcome. When: Sa, July 23rd, 1:00-4:30. Where: Lowell or Pyle. Cost: $70. Limit: 20

    Building Character: Friends, Foes and Foils

    Characters can make or break your story. How do you invent people on the page so complicated, willful, eccentric and flawed they seem more human than the real deal? Discussion and in-class exercises explore character qualities that unlock readers’ hearts, whether friend, foe or foil. When: Sa, Oct 8, 1-4:30 p.m. Where: Pyle Center, 702 Langdon Street, Madison, WI; Cost: $70.     Write Now: Prompts That Propel Your Prose or Poetry.

    Every writer begins by staring into the same blank page. Together we'll fill it. Try your hand at techniques that intensify image, lure with vivid language, enhance character emotion, surprise both reader and writer, and more. Get support from a writing community and professional critique coach. Includes weekly craft discussions and optional in-class critique. All genres and levels welcome.  When: Tues, Sept 20, 27, Oct 4, 6:15-8:15 p.m. Where: Pyle Center, 702 Langdon Street, Madison, WI; Cost: $135; Limit: 12.
