Electrify Your Writing: Flash Fiction/Prose Poem Workshop. Some call prose poems and flash fiction “kissing cousins.” The genres share compressed length and highly charged language, though spotlight plot and character differently. What are those differences? They may be in the eye of the beholder (i.e. editor) more than writer. Week one we’ll compare and contrast the forms. Week two: dialogue do’s and don’ts. Week three: found experiments (transforming to-do lists, manuals, letters, and more). Analyze work by published writers, peer-critique stories/prose poems weekly (submit one piece up to 750 words per session), and take home prompts to charge up your writing in a flash.  When: March, Tuesdays,9th, 23rd, 30th, 6:00pm-8:30pm; Where: Angela's house, 217 E Sunset Ct, Madison, WI; Cost: $150. Limit: 6.  To register, and/or for more details, email Angela at ajrydell@wisc.edu.

Page Turner Tips: Lessons from the Bestseller Lists. Bestsellers teach us what readers love. We can do more than envy their successes, we can steal their secrets. Come analyze bestseller techniques that reach across time and genre and straight into a reader’s heart, including strong voice, gut emotional appeal, high concept premise, shocking subject matter, and characters so memorable they're larger than life. http://continuingstudies.wisc.edu/classes/writing-lessons-from-bestsellers. When: Sa, Feb 20, 1:00-4:30 pm; Where: Lowell Center; Cost: $70; Limit: 20.
