Samsung has introduced a souped up version of the Samsung Galaxy Ace. Dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus, its modest bump in specs doesn’t make it much more than that. It’s almost like a Samsung Galaxy S internally with its 1GHz processor and 5 megapixel camera, but even then it only has 3GB of internal storage and a 3.65 inch HVGA (yes, HVGA) display.
This phone is pretty much considered entry-level by today’s standards so expect this to be cheap wherever you can find it when it launches. “The GALAXY Ace Plus will be available in Russia starting from January 2012, and will be gradually rolled out to Europe, CIS, Latin America, Southeast and Southwest Asia, the Middle East, Africa and China,” says Samsung. New addition to Android-powered GALAXY portfolio delivers style, power and versatility
SEOUL, Korea - January 3, 2012 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, today announced the introduction of the Samsung GALAXY Ace Plus. As an enhanced version of the widely popular GALAXY Ace, the GALAXY Ace Plus is the smartphone for trendy and sociable young professionals. The GALAXY Ace Plus will be available in Russia starting from January 2012, and will be gradually rolled out to Europe, CIS, Latin America, Southeast and Southwest Asia, the Middle East, Africa and China.
“Samsung Mobile is opening 2012 with the introduction of the Samsung GALAXY Ace Plus, which will help enhance the GALAXY brand following the huge success of the GALAXY S, GALAXY SII, GALAXY Ace and GALAXY mini. The GALAXY Ace Plus benefits from the Android™ Gingerbread platform and Samsung services, which provide a better mobile experience for more consumers,” said JK Shin, President of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics. “In 2012, we will continue to make every effort to create an easy and fun mobile experience by expanding our incredibly popular GALAXY smartphone range, which is now one of the most recognized and successful mobile brands in the world.”
Style and power with expanded features
Building on the previous GALAXY Ace style heritage, the GALAXY Ace Plus is a stylishly designed smartphone contained in a modern and minimalist casing with rounded edges, featuring an affordably-sized 3.65” HVGA display. The phone has been designed to be simple yet elegant.
The GALAXY Ace Plus is backed by an impressive 1GHz processor and HSDPA 7.2 Mbps connectivity, providing all the versatility and browsing performance that today’s busy and sociable young professionals need. WiFi 802.11 functionality offers lightning-fast speeds for browsing, downloading and video streaming. Application startups are faster with virtually no lag time, even while multitasking. Additionally, an impressive 2GB of shared storage capacity for multimedia content and up to 1GB of direct storage for applications-more than any smartphone in its category-allow users greater content freedom and usability.
Running on Android Gingerbread and featuring Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface, the GALAXY Ace Plus allows users to handle mobile tasks faster and more efficiently. New music playback functionality features a play progress bar and the ability to view music tracks in folders. Call features allow users to reject calls with text messages or add unwanted callers to a black list log. For added productivity, users also have the option of using ThinkFree, a tool that enables viewing and editing of Office documents, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDFs, while on the move.
The GALAXY Ace Plus enables users to stay connected through Samsung’s Social Hub, Music Hub and ChatON services. ChatON, connecting all phone users-across any phone platform-into a single community using phone numbers instead of usernames and passwords, provides an easy instant messaging, group chatting and sharing of content in multiple formats-images, video, voice, contacts, calendar-to make messaging simpler and more intuitive than ever.
Nielsen’s ringing in with their end-of-the-year lists of top brands, companies and web destinations. One that caught our eye, of course, was the smartphone manufacturer chart.
They pulled data from the months of August 2011 through October 2011. This isn’t overall OEM market share but gives an idea of the trends that were developing leading into the holiday season.
The Samsung Galaxy S will not receive a “Value Pack” update with added features, a spokesperson speaking toThe Next Web has confirmed. The software upgrade was initially discussed as an alternative to Android 4.0, adding some of the operating system’s new features within the framework of Android 2.3. Samsung stated last month that the hardware of the Galaxy S can not support the new Ice Cream Sandwich build of Android along with their TouchWiz user interface. Hardware is again being pointed to as the reason why a so-called “Value Pack” will not be delivered. The news will certainly frustrate owners of the highly popular smartphone further, but at this point it looks like Samsung can or will do little to remedy the issue.
At the top of the chart was Apple taking up 29% of the sales throughout this period, but HTC is not far behind with 21%. RIM, surprisingly, is sitting at 17%, ahead of Samsung and Motorola who both have 11% each.
It would be nice to get an idea of how these numbers stacked up through Christmas but those numbers will make their way to the forefront soon enough. To see more figures (such as top web brands and top destinations for watching online video) visit Nielsen’s site here.
Looking back at 2011, there were some ups (Nvidia) there were some downs (LG) but when it comes to the Android Market — business is booming. 2011 was perhaps the best year yet in Android gaming (thanks mostly in part to iOS ports) and I just wanted to take a brief moment and go over ..MORE
In this day and age it seems you can’t find a new phone without an eager group of developers ready to support it. Some people come to Android and may not have the slightest clue of what rooting and flashing custom ROMs/mods/kernels is. (I have two of them in my very own household.)
If you were ever curious as to why you should root your phone and what benefits you’d get from it. It isn’t without its cons, though. AndroidForums.com user cammykool reposted an article of Locker Gnome’s, a very good breakdown of the pros and cons of installing custom ROMs. Many people have many different reasons.
For me, it used to be about making the most out of whatever custom skin came on top of any phone I owned that was not supported by Cyanogen. Now that I have a Galaxy Nexus, I find that I don’t even have a desire to flash any ROM, though I do keep root handy in case the urge pops up (and I do rely on root-specific apps, ROM flashing aside).
What about you? Take a look at the article over at AndroidForums.com and see if some of the pros will apply to you and to see if some of the cons will deter you. After that, be sure to navigate to the All Things Root sub-section of your device’s section on AndroidForums.com to get started on rooting and installing some ROMs that may be of use to you.
Just yesterday Samsung gave us a glimmer of hope that their 2010 flagship devices – the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab – could get Ice Cream Sandwich as they went back to reevaluate the feasibility of the task. With TouchWiz in the way, it certainly won’t seem as easy as we’d hope considering these devices have limited storage compared to their 2011 followups.
New rumors say that Samsung might not be able to bring Ice Cream Sandwich but still wants to bring some of its features over to the device in the form of a “value pack.”
The value pack would add features to their Gingerbread ROMs that mirror some of Ice Cream Sandwich’s. While this obviously isn’t that great of a solution compared to getting the real deal you’d at least be getting some new features not previously available to users of their Gingerbread phones.
Of course, things are a bit different for the 7 inch tab. The main idea is to get Ice Cream Sandwich onto it so that those users can take advantage of the tablet-specific apps available.
With just a value pack, it kind of defeats the purpose, no? We hope this rumor is true if Samsung really can’t get Ice Cream Sandwich onto these devices, but we do hope they’re doing everything they can to make ICS a possibility. [SammyHub via GSMArena]

Okay, so this is not the Galaxy S III. I don’t care what you’re hearing from around the internet. But it looks awfully pretty, doesn’t it? These concept images came from a Russian website called Concept-Phones which shows off just that — user generated concepts. And the user did a fairly good job at that. I wont even go into the supposed specs of the device seeing how they’re more of a wish-list than anything. Just expect a lot of “HD-this” and “quad-that” to make an obligatory appearance somewhere in there. One more time, there isn’t anything official about this pic at all.
I feel like we barely got the Galaxy S II in our hands and now we’ve all got the Galaxy S III fever? That was fast.

Take the Samsung Galaxy Y and Galaxy Y Pro, slap on dual-SIM support, and you have the pair of handsets announced by the Korean manufacturer today. Just with the original lineup of Galaxy Y phones, the new handsets feature 830MHz processors, 3MP rear cameras, and VGA front-facing cameras. The Galaxy Y Pro Duos gets a 2.6-inch touchscreen with a QWERTY keyboard found below, a BlackBerry-esque staple of most handsets with the ‘pro’ label. The Galaxy Y Duos foregoes the keyboard for a 3.14-inch display.
Folks in Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa can expect to see the two new offerings in January, though pricing has not yet been announced. We fully expect the Galaxy Y Duos and Galaxy Y Pro Duos to make an appearance at CES in Las Vegas.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Active can take a beating, but it isn’t invincible, is it? This collection of videos suggests otherwise, as the handset designed to survive the stresses put on it by an active user is tortured in a way that makes Hostel look like a Disney flick.
