Referral Guidelines

1)            Any athlete with a witnessed loss of consciousness of any duration should be spine boarded and transported immediately to the nearest emergency room department via emergency vehicle.
 
 
2)            Any athlete who has symptoms of a concussion and is not stable (condition is deteriorating) is to be transported to the nearest emergency room department via emergency vehicle.
 
 
3)            Athletes who exhibit any of the following symptoms should be transported immediately to the nearest emergency room department via emergency vehicle.
    
                                *Deterioration of neurological function
                                *Loss of consciousness
                                *Decreased or irregular respirations
                                *Decreased or irregular pulse
                                *Unequal, dialted, or unreactive pupils
                                *Any sign or symptom associated with injuries to the spine or skull
                                *Mental status changes: Lethargic, confusion, and agitation
                                *Seizure activity
                                *Cranial nerve deficiencies
 
 
4)            Stable athletes who are symptomatic may be transported by their parents. Parents need to be advised to contact athlete's Primary Care Physician or seek nearest emergency room department on the day of the injury.
 
                        -Parents must ALWAYS have option of emergency transportation.
