[ Artist’s Statement – Explanatory Comment ] My work consists of interactive animation played by a game-pad, a play space projecting the animation, and maps of animation world on large fabrics connecting the digital animation to the analogue installation as a kind of playthings. [ My work explores: ] 1. combining the advantages of animation films with those of picture books 2. blending digital media with analogue media 3. initiating lively communication among viewers, especially children and parents such as bedtime reading picture books to children and analogue playthings 4. making viewers respond emotionally to the combined effects of visual language and sounds 5. visualising a heart-warming message from the narrative story I wrote [ Like turning over pages: ] The story of the animation stops at each spot of the map. A viewer clicks the control stick of the game-pad on the blinking spot on the map and goes to the story of the next area. [ Clickable Map: ] After once through the animation, the clickable map appears. From the map page, you can jump to each scene on the each spot or the replay all as if it is same as viewer’s seeing their favourite pages repeatedly in picture books. [ Analogue Media: ] I made use of hand-drawing, painting with artistic materials, several types of Japanese paper, Indian ink, pasting multicoloured pieces of paper, real pictures, and real footprints from my friend’s cat. [ Digital Media: ] I increased the variations of each image such as trees, houses, hills, plants, and background textures by adding effects and colour change with Photoshop. [ Game-pad Interactivity: ] Some scenes have such the interactive actions as walking direction of the character, dancing, sleeping, and catching a butterfly by the arrow keys and 1-4 buttons of the game-pad. [ Animation Maps on Huge Fabrics: ] The largest map is put on the floor with tapes such as a rug, but some map fabrics are put on the floor casually such as small mountains so that children can cover their heads and shoulders with them and play with them as a kind of playthings. (I gained the idea to use fabric as playthings when I did research in children, I saw they played by using merely large cloths, and I was surprised) These maps connect the online animation to the offline installation. [ Characters: ] Despite the difficulty of creation on animation, I tried to create realistic and round characters with texture of animals’ fur such as long-lasting characters from picture books. In addition, I adopted fat and short figures with clothes and items such as soft toys as trademarks and well-known mascots. [ This animation world applies to every case: ] Because the character makes journey to look for special treasure for its mother’s birthday present and the birthday of viewers’ each mother varies, this animation world has all four seasons in each area on the map. Moreover, the reason why the character is an animal is because it is hard to distinguish male or female, I intend anyone to get into the character’s role. [ Heart-warming story: ] When the character comes home, its mother who was worried about her child says, "Oh, my silly child! You are my precious treasure. I’m happy that you are happy and live with a big smile." This message comes from my experience that my deceased mother who got gland cancer said, "I have no fear of death at all, but it is really hard for me to be parted from you because you are my treasure."
A Pirate's Tall Tale Having lost his father in a barefoot pirate squabble little Jack Rackham was raised by a one eyed mess hall cook on a pirate ship called the "The Queens Fancy". Jackie bore witness to pirate life every day, the crude men, the petty fights, the strolls down the plank. But his guardian and dear friend kept him close, and in a fatherly attempt to shield him from the realities of being a pirate he embellished their life to him. He would tell him tales of great pirates named after the color of their beard, his father who he claimed was a pirate prince, and even greater stories about treasures sunken, buried, lost, and forgotten. With his vivid imagination Jackie soon aspired to be the greatest treasure hunting, bearding touting, adventure seeking pirate to have ever existed. As a child he would run up and down the deck of the "The Queens Fancy" enacting, and reenacting tall tales of the adventures that lived in his head, much to the nuisance of his fellow pirates. But they were able to bear Jackie's antics, not for the love of the boy, but for the fear of the tough old cook who's reign of the ship's kitchen demanded respect. As is common in stories like these, one day the cook met an unfortunate end while cutting carrots when the sea was raging. With his caretaker's untimely end, the boy grew even more frantic in his fantasies, perhaps to escape his new reality. But with the cooks protection gone he no longer enjoyed safety amongst the increasingly irritated pirates. It didn't take long for the crew to hatch a plan to dispose of the boy. Cold blooded as they were, walking a boy of the plank was beyond their cruelty. Instead they drew some crude treasure maps and convinced the boy that only he alone, the true pirate prince, can find the lost treasure. They put him on a small boat and steered him towards the empty horizon. Jackie's eagerness and his ear to ear smile never faded, even as the pirate ship disappeared from his sight.
