I have been down this road many times growing up. It is the road that eventually leads to the family farm. growing up, my Dad would take me here almost every weekend he had me. there was always something to do, something to take care of. there was a little trailer with 4 channels of television, some carpet from the 70s, and a porch with a view. eventually the original trailer was torn down and my grandparents moved a new, slightly larger trailer closer to the barn. there was no 70s carpet but still the 4 channel television and an bigger porch with a better view. Last Sunday, Fathers day, I went out there again. This time, when I turned onto the property there was a paved road that led all the way up to a huge rock home. with a garage. I walked in the house and every step echoed off the large ceilings. When I found everyone they were in the living room installing a sound system that hooked into a 50 inch television. No longer did we have 4 channels, there were thousands. No longer did we spend our day roaming outside, we sat inside and watched golf on a big tv. we didn't even watch the sunset because they were installing outdoor speakers on the back porch. I am often thankful for my upbringing for many reasons, one being I spent so many weekends remembering how to be humble, how less is more, and how we don't need huge tvs, houses, and speakers to be entertained. As nice as the house looked, part of me is sad that when I take my future children there, they won't feel the simplicity that once was. They will see a city house on farm land with people watching reality tv inside. While Whitt has not lost is charm or its meaning, it has fallen into the traps of American culture that bigger is better. My heart is broken.

Alfie, back in August
He may look like the sweetest and best-behaving pet you can imagine... indeed, sweet he is... but he's a handful when it comes to mischief and nasty habits. He's tearing the carpet apart at every seam he can find (I am now reduced to patching and filling holes!), and he would insist on pulling large, heavy books out of the bookcase in order to get to the narrow space left in the back, between bookcase and wall and purposely there to provide ventilation for the television set and powerstrip with the various components plugged in. All of my cats have done this at one time or another; but Alfie is the first one to keep turning off my TV by stepping on the on/off button of the strip. The embedded shot -- taken a few weeks after the first one -- shows how he used to get in before pulling some volumes out and scattering them all over the floor. I subsequently installed a screen in the back of the books (only the middle section has an open back); but after that still wouldn't deter him, I had to bar access with strips of tape in front of the books. Okay, he's been a bit miffed since... :-) >>>
