If you are trying to locate your ancestor who lived in the former Prussian province of Pomerania [Pommern in German] your best chance for success will be by using three major German sources:
1. Passenger Lists leaving German ports, such as Hamburg and Stettin. These records often provide a place of birth or last residence in Germany.
2. Church [or Parish] records (Lutheran or Catholic). These records provide christening, marriage, and burial records.
3. Civil records (Standesamt]. These records provide birth, marriage, and death information for all individuals.
These sources will only be useful if you have examined sources in America that provide the clues needed to link your family with the correct ancestral family in Germany.
Many church and civil records are now available online and many surname indexes for these sources are also available. See "Church Records" and "Civil Registration Records" on this site. Also, check "Places" and "Sources" on this website to locate new resources for your family history research in Pomerania.
