COURSE DESCRIPTION

This intensive studio course will focus on the creation of experimental sound works utilizing hybrid analog / digital systems developed by class members. Students will investigate synthesis techniques via the SuperCollider programming language / environment and Brown’s ARP 2500 analog modular synthesizer, and will leverage the unique strengths of these tools towards a personal production platform that is more than the sum of its parts. The course will include discussion of historical works / texts, hands-on demonstrations, in-class projects, and critical engagement with new works by class members, culminating in a final project that incorporates knowledge gained throughout the semester. 

Prerequisite / co-requisite (with consent of instructor): MUSC 1210 (Seminar in Electronic Music: Real-Time Systems). Open to upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, enrollment is limited to 12. Enrollment determined at first class meeting; attendance mandatory.

GRADING POLICY

Final project: 40%
Midterm project: 20%
Weekly assignments: 20%
Attendance & participation: 20%


Each student is responsible for attending class, completing in- and out-of-class assignments and participating in critiques and discussion of readings and example materials. Each student will be required to assign the group a listening exercise and reading assignment (in spaces marked “TBD” throughout the syllabus), and will lead the discussion on these assignments. Students missing more than three classes will not receive credit.
