Humble House................. Original part / 1830
Humble House................. Original part / 1830
Located behind Marion County High School, Lebanon, Kentucky off of Hwy. 68. Hazel Humble Niles passed away last October at the age of 101 and the farm is being sold to settle her estate. For years have wanted to see this house up close. With the house and 234 acre farm going up for auction shortly, I had my chance. Called the realty firm that is handling the auction and was given the info that I wanted. The front of the house was built in 1890 with the back part being built in 1830. As far as they knew the building to the right of the house was the living quarters for the slaves. ...................................................................................................................................................... Have asked around and been back to the Humble house twice trying to come up with what the function of this building was. Gonna need some help on this Folks! The building has one entrance only and only two windows. The inside had a fireplace, but it has been bricked over closing it off. The other thing that you notice more on the inside is that some of the bricks are of a yellowish color, not matching the rest of the walls. Possibly openings in the walls for ventilation ??? In the immediate vicinity of the Humble house are two other large brick houses that predated the Civil War and both of these have structures very similar to this one. I searched on Flickr for photos in Kentucky of slave quarters.............. several photos and not a one that was in anyway close to this. A Meat-house .......... This seemed to be a good possibility, even taking a flashlight with me to check and see if there was any evidence ( nails, wooden pegs ) of meat being cured in it. Nothing showing. Carriage house .................. to small and not a sign of larger doors anywhere. Asking for Help !!

As far as they knew the building to the right of the house was the living quarters for the slaves. The house is structurally sound , even with it being left to the elements since 1993. A roof that is kept in good repair stops lots of other problems that happens with vacant houses. The house sales as part of a tract of 18 acres. I asked if there was any interest in it being bought and restored, his reply was .......... " Its a shame, it would probably sell for more money if it was torn down and buried with the tract selling without any buildings on it. " Will post some photos of the interior and the slave quarters soon.
