Big Mountain

The world-class skiing at Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley plus a strong coaches’ training program and standards, a well-structured curriculum,  will help our athletes to develop into strong, smart and skilled skiers.  With a focus on strong big mountain ski technique, the kids will learn to vary turn shape and speed for specific terrain, and to ski well in steeps, powder, crud and other conditions found at Alpine Meadows.  In addition to the technical skiing elements, our Freeride skiers will learn basic winter awareness skills including reading terrain and snow conditions, line choices, hazard assessment and recognition and avoidance of avalanche hazards.  Our  coaches will provide a framework for the kids to hone their skills and balance their ability with the reality of the mountain.

Comp Judging

Big Mountain Events are based on the following
  • Line: difficulty/creativity of line
  • Technique: quality of linked turns, not any particular “style, but how the turns work with the terrain
  • Control: loss of control will result in reduction of points
  • Fluidity: how well the skier moves consistently, with no pauses, down the hill
  • Overall Impression

Chairlift Safety

CHAIRLIFT RIDING PRACTICES
Skiing and snowboarding are sports that people of all ages can enjoy. In order to participate, skiers and riders, including children, commonly ride chairlifts to access the slopes. Sometimes children ride chairlifts
with adults, instructors and coaches. In certain circumstances, children may ride lifts without adults, instructors or coaches. Furthermore, while there may be restraining bars on chairlifts, lowering the bars does not guarantee the safety of the passengers.
Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.
We train our lift operators and instructors, as necessary to verbally remind children to
SIT BACK, HOLD ON, LOOK FORWARD, and DON’T FOOL AROUND.
We encourage parents to re-enforce this message with their children.

Meeting Spot

Team meets at 8:30 a.m. in the Mezzanine and then out to the right hand side of Summit Chair by the tree at 8:45 a.m. If you are late the team will be taking one lap on Summit and then meeting for a stretch above the gate.
