One Up On Wall Street : How To Use What You Already Know To Make Money In The Market
Peter Lynch is America's number-one money manager. His mantra: Average investors can become experts in their own field and can pick winning stocks as effectively as Wall Street professionals by doing just a little research.
Now, in a new introduction written specifically for this edition of One Up on Wall Street, Lynch gives his take on the incredible rise of Internet stocks, as well as a list of twenty winning companies of high-tech '90s. That many of these winners are low-tech supports his thesis that amateur investors can continue to reap exceptional rewards from mundane, easy-to-understand companies they encounter in their daily lives.
Investment opportunities abound for the layperson, Lynch says. By simply observing business developments and taking notice of your immediate world -- from the mall to the workplace -- you can discover potentially successful companies before professional analysts do. This jump on the experts is what produces "tenbaggers," the stocks that appreciate tenfold or more and turn an average stock portfolio into a star performer.
The former star manager of Fidelity's multibillion-dollar Magellan Fund, Lynch reveals how he achieved his spectacular record. Writing with John Rothchild, Lynch offers easy-to-follow directions for sorting out the long shots from the no shots by reviewing a company's financial statements and by identifying which numbers really count. He explains how to stalk tenbaggers and lays out the guidelines for investing in cyclical, turnaround, and fast-growing companies.
Lynch promises that if you ignore the ups and downs of the market and the endless speculation about interest rates, in the long term (anywhere from five to fifteen years) your portfolio will reward you. This advice has proved to be timeless and has made One Up on Wall Street a number-one bestseller. And now this classic is as valuable in the new millennium as ever.

gecko: i have seen a show recently where some researchers have managed to "replicate" the molecular properties of the gecko's feet to the point where climbing a glass wall like spiderman is virtually possible now. apparantly the gecko's feet pads are created in such a way that the skin MOLECULES actually INTERACT with the surface MOLECULES of glass. that's why they can climb a smooth surface. for an instant it's as if they almost become part of the surface they are on. sounds unbelieveable and too incredible to be true! where will science and nature take us next? FROM WIKIPEDIA~a better explanation The toes of the gecko have a special adaptation that allows them to adhere to most surfaces without the use of liquids or surface tension. Recent studies of the spatula tipped setae on gecko footpads demonstrate that the attractive forces that hold geckos to surfaces are van der Waals interactions between the finely divided setae and the surfaces themselves. Every square millimeter of a gecko's footpad contains about 14,000 hair-like setae. Each seta has a diameter of 5 micrometers. Human hair varies from 18 to 180 micrometers, so a human hair could hold between 3 and 36 setae. Each seta is in turn tipped with between 100 and 1,000 spatulae.[4] Each spatula is 0.2 micrometer long[4] (one five-millionth of a meter), or just below the wavelength of visible light.[5] Uroplatus fimbriatus clinging to glass. These van der Waals interactions involve no fluids; in theory, a boot made of synthetic setae would adhere as easily to the surface of the International Space Station as it would to a living room wall, although adhesion varies with humidity and is dramatically reduced under water, suggesting a contribution from capillarity.[6] The setae on the feet of geckos are also self cleaning and will usually remove any clogging dirt within a few steps.[4][7] Teflon, which has very low van der Waals forces,[8] is the only known surface to which a gecko cannot stick.[9] Geckos' toes seem to be "double jointed", but this is a misnomer. Their toes actually bend in the opposite direction from our fingers and toes. This allows them to overcome the van der Waals force by peeling their toes off surfaces from the tips inward. In essence, this peeling action alters the angle of incidence between millions of individual setae and the surface, reducing the Van der Waals force. Geckos' toes operate well below their full attractive capabilities for most of the time. This is because there is a great margin for error depending upon the roughness of the surface, and therefore the number of setae in contact with that surface. If a typical mature 70 g (2.5 oz) gecko had every one of its setae in contact with a surface, it would be capable of holding aloft a weight of 133 kg (290 lb):[10] each spatula can exert an adhesive force of 10 nanonewtons (0.0010 mgf).[6] Each seta can resist 10 milligrams-force (100 ┬ÁN), which is equivalent to 10 atmospheres of pull.[4]. This means a gecko can support about eight times its weight hanging from just one toe on smooth glass

(series of 10 pix follow below) Is this what you wanted, Kita? Kita has been wanting to go outside again for the past month or so. He has been crying and yowling by the windows which open onto the former 'cat garden' daily. Taj just sits by the windows in a long-lasting pose of yearning, but Kita howls! They have a nice little balcony with table they lie on - but - Kita wants this area again! I've been letting them out into this area, which used to have their cat-garden, on Saturday mornings when our cleaning lady, Xiao Li comes and we can both keep an eye on the cats. But Kita has gotten so insistent about getting out that he bit her and also a student (without breaking the skin) while trying to get them to open the window for him and getting their non-compliance. The problem is that this area, 4 storys up, had no ledge, just a straight drop down to a large awning on the first floor. I finally had to dismantle the previous cat garden because Kita just kept finding ways out and devoted all his energy in a duel with me as I daily tried new ways to secure the screened 'walls.' We all lost when I took it down after about a month.
