Important Tips about Security Systems

1. Know how to use your Security System, Fire System, CCTV or Access Control thoroughly.

The best way to learn your system is to be trained by our skilled and experienced technicians (it is recommended that whomever is using the system be trained as well). Make sure you are confident in your system and remember to ask the installing technician for the owner’s manual too.  You may find such manuals free online (search panel name- operation manual) or call the office of A-Metro 256-721-0400 to obtain one. Do not hesitate to call A-Metro and ask questions, our technicians and staff are trained in answering the questions you may have regarding your system. 

2. Test your alarm system at least once a month.

Please test your home or commercial security systems on a frequent basis (Businesses, do so at a convenient time when customers/employees leave the building). BEFORE you begin to test system or send signals do not forget to call A-Metro 256-721-0400 to put your system on test or call monitoring station direct or make sure you KNOW all pertinent information associated with your account. To place your account on test you will need your account information and pass code and have authorization to do so.  

        Additionally, Test ALL of your Sensors 

For the performance of your Home and Business Security System to be most effective you should test all of the sensors and make sure sensors are properly clean and cared for (this could include bugs and dirt). Please take the time to generally clean up of the security sensors or call to have a technician provide this service. The three main sensors are smoke sensors (or detectors), motion sensors, and glass break sensors. Please follow the below guidelines to test.

  • Smoke Sensors or Detectors- test by pressing the test button and holding it for about 15 seconds to one minute depending on the sensor.
  • Motion Detectors-test by walking in front of the motion detectors after arming system. Again length of time depends on the programming.
  • Glass Break Sensors- require the sound of glass breaking. Some examples include clapping (directly in front of the sensor) or shaking keys in front of the module aggressively.

3. Changes of contact information, please notify A-Metro or the Monitoring Station.

Please report any changes to your contact information, new phone numbers, name changes, new contacts or to remove any persons from call list. These changes are expected, especially in a commercial atmosphere. Remember if A-Metro or Monitoring Station cannot contact you, there is no way to notify you of any concerns, false alarms, break-ins or troubles. 

4. Make sure all Door and Windows are secure when you arm your security system/panel. 

For residential, Every time you unlock your door train yourself to disarm your panel this will prevent false alarms. Make sure all Door and Windows are secure. When you leave your home or when you arm your system make sure the system is in the most secure setting as possible for safety reasons.  Locking doors and windows add a second layer of protection to any security system. An intruder will look for the easiest way to make entry, if it is difficult to make entry he or she will move elsewhere. 

For Businesses, make sure the business is secure but more importantly, make the business functional without setting the system off. When you arm your system make sure the system is in the most secure setting as possible for safety reasons.
