“I can see the destiny you sold; Turned into a shining band of gold” Wrapped Around Your Finger: The Police, Synchronicity This is one of the darker of songs in The Police’s library, but one of the more brilliantly written as well. I always wonder what a novel or collection of poems by Sting’s hands would be like. The sounds in the song are very brilliant, clear and distinct. It carries the song very well with a dark back ground and a clear ringing through it. Sing’s voice is laid perfectly on top of all of the tones and sounds to make a wonderful song. I will admit that this song is probably about something different than what I take out of it, but that is the beauty that I often find in music. What it means to one is something different to another. For me this song speaks on deep levels of the master and apprentice, be it God and the Devil, Husband and Wife (though who is the master in that scenario is always different!), Doctor and Intern… the list goes on. I like the symbolism that the master was once an apprentice bound by a symbol- in this case a ring. It is part of what we do when we learn either from a teacher or a “Master” of someone wiser than we are to submit to their knowledge- binding ourselves to them in a small or a large way. There are so many levels to this, but I think this song (in my interpretation) portrays this well musically and lyrically. Sometimes the ones we submit to and give out trust and fate have our best interests at heart and sometimes they do not. I think in this song I get the feeling that it is not the case of best intentions. *** Artist Notes *** I wanted to use a really over sized “ring” since it was a really strong bond in the song: almost as if the ring was something clamped down on the finger of the apprentice / master. Lyrics: You consider me the young apprentice Caught between the Scylla and carbides Hypnotized by you if I should linger Staring at the ring around your finger I have only come here seeking knowledge Things they wouldn't teach me of in college I can see the destiny you sold Turned into a shining band of gold I'll be wrapped around your finger I'll be wrapped around your finger Mephistopheles is not your name But I know what you're up to just the same I will listen hard to your tuition And you will see it come to its fruition I'll be wrapped around your finger I'll be wrapped around your finger Devil and the deep blue sea behind me Vanish in the air you'll never find me I will turn your face to alabaster Then you will find your servant is your master And you'll be wrapped around my finger You'll be wrapped around my finger You'll be wrapped around my finger

I went to the flea market Saturday. The first place I stopped was a jewelry stand. Gaudy "gold" and "gems," but also some less gaudy silver(-like material) and what I took to be turquoise. I like turquoise. I'd like to find a turquoise necklace. As I was perusing the case of rings, the man behind the table, off to my left, said, "You better sell her somethin', look at that nice camera, she's got some money." Hmn. Then, of course, the woman behind the table moved in for the kill. Now, I like to think I'm pretty level-headed when it comes to impulse buying. I chatted it up with the jewelry seller while she hit me with the finer points of her ornaments. "They don't turn," she assured me, "I even wear mine in the shower. Look, my fingers ain't green." "Mind if I take a picture of you with your rings?" I asked, hopeful. She was wearing a white sports bra with some kind of vest over it. I *really* wanted to take her picture. But she went on & on about how she'd break the camera, how she hated having her picture taken. And I can relate to that, so I dropped the subject. But THEN I bought this ring...! I bought this craptastic little non-silver ring with a "stone" that turns out not only NOT to have a "speck of real gold" in it as promised (I don't even *like* gold), but not to be a stone at all. It's like a piece of glass with turquoise paint embedded in it. That, and fools' gold. I bought this ring, and I didn't even get her picture. If that doesn't make me a sucker, I don't know what would. Next time, I'll be ready.
