EXETER RD. BOURNEMOUTH. DORSET. APRIL 2011
Left is the drive to the Winter Gardens car park. The Valentino Italian Restaurant is hidden by the various signs, with Cranborne Rd the next left. Terrace Rd continues straight on, with Exeter Rd turning to the right to join up with The Square. The corner plot has recently been cleared to reveal a bit more clearly where Terrace Cottage, and later, the Merville Hotel once stood. The land above is the Terrace Mount car park which was once known as Prospect Mount, and was home to various hotels for many years. It is earmarked for redevelopment as a mix of hotel, residential and car parking. On the upper left part of the former Cranborne Hall Hotel is visible, it was converted into the Carlton Mount flats in the 1990s. In the background the former Torbay Hotel that became a nightclub under various guises in latter years, including Bar K, 2020 and Bar Me, is being converted into flats with commercial units at street level. To the left is a relatively modern block of flats called Edmondsham House, built on the site of the much earlier Edmondsham Cottage on the corner of Orchard Street, the only 'street' in Bournemouth.
Exeter catacombs. This is a Nineteenth Century building, built in an Egyptian style. We went on a guided tour of Exeter which ended with a walk around the catacombs. Other people were shooting with compacts with flash, but I luckily had my large aperture lens on, so I could shoot in the dark on f/1.4 and ISO 800. Very dark in there! I didn't have my tripod with me, so I tried the usual tricks such as getting down on one knee and trying to steady the camera against my forehead. If you go there, take a tripod.
