If you have never attended a support group meeting, we would really like to encourage you to give it a try. Listening to others share their concerns and challenges and how they are coping with them may just be what you need to help you with your daily routine with your loved one whether they are still at home or perhaps in a Health Care Center.
I know from first hand experience even though it has been many years since my mother was at home and then in a health care center how hard it can be for the caregiver to provide the care that is needed as the disease progresses. The support group meetings back then were a big help to me, learning about the disease, what to expect and how others met the challenges they faced. - Karen
You will find you must adjust to the unpredictable behaviors that Alzheimer’s can bring, such as agitation, hallucinations and incontinence. You have to learn to communicate better and create a safe home environment. You may even need an emergency readiness checklist. You have to learn to deal with dressing, grooming and bathing habits which become difficult for some with Alzheimer’s and you must learn to help them adapt to social activities.
The memories may be gone…….your loved one may struggle to remember important details, may not be able to find his shoes but he knows that he wants to feel needed and important. Memories of his past may still be there and you can encourage him with photographs, stories, music and a soft touch.
