Sense-i Photo 1 class, week 4: self portrait & flash This one was easier than the others this week, but made difficult because I didn't think things through. You all in the class probably haven't picked up on this, it's a well-kept secret, but I'm something of a math/science/tech nerd. I know, I know, you never would have guessed. I spend a lot of time where I am right now, at a computer. I have five, and three are almost always on & doing stuff. I'm also an incurable night owl. I'll get into something or be thinking about stuff so much that I just can't sleep, and every few months or so, I end up skipping a night. So I tried to catch all that (geek, computer, insomnia) in this shot. I made things terribly difficult on myself here, though, by not moving the setup away from the corner. As it is, the camera is on a tripod behind my desk, and the only way I can see the LCD on the back is to turn it around and screw up the setup. I had to re-frame every click without being able to look through the viewfinder. I later realized that if I had just moved the monitor out to the dining room table, or wherever, this would have been a 2 or 3 take session. In fact, I didn't even have to have the monitor - it's just a blurry black rectangle, and I'm sure I could have come up with a reasonable facsimile in Photoshop. The screen isn't doing the lighting, the flash is pointing up at me on the desk. I shot it in black & white, but wanted a color cast to give a dead-of-night feel. At first, I went with 'Matrix Green', but that was so obvious. Settled on a faded blue. Looks like I'm wearing a denim shirt. I also stuck in some super nerdiness. I pasted in Maxwell's equations, four very elegant laws of physics that describe basic behavior of electromagnetism & light. I blurred, faded, and warped them in an attempt to make it seem as if the screen is projecting them onto me. On this monitor, they're far more promient than I would have liked, hopefully the print comes out OK.
