For over 70 years, Altrusa International of Fayetteville, AR., Inc. has supported literacy and educational development programs in our community.  This year we are excited to partner with True Lit, Fayetteville's Literacy Festival to offer 6th grade students a writing contest titled “Young Writers of NW Arkansas”.



The Young Writers of NW Arkansas contest is open to 6th grade students. Contestants must attend school (public, private, or home school) in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Note: published poems and short stories previously appearing in other contests, books, magazines, etc. are NOT accepted for entry. 

All poetry submissions must be 30 lines or fewer. They may be either neatly handwritten or typed using double-line spacing. 
The required theme for 2018 has not been determined.  All entries must be original works created by the student. For poetry submissions, the title does not count as one of the 30 lines.

All prose submissions should be a length of three (3) pages or less (no word count is necessary).  Submissions may be either neatly handwritten or typed using double-line spacing. The required theme for 2018 has not been determined.   All entries must be original works created by the student. Any fiction or non-fiction story, essay, short screenplay, diary entry, blog, or journal entry is accepted. .

Although not required, contestants may submit one poetry entry and one prose entry, if they desire.



Prizes will be Gift Cards in the following amounts:

Poetry: First Place is $100.00, Second, $50.00, and Third, $25.00

Prose: First Place is $100.00, Second, $50.00, and Third, $25.00

             The schools of the first place winners will be rewarded $200.


Submitting Entries

1.       Print out the entry form  Young Writers of NW Arkansas Entry Form

2.       Fill out the entry with your current and correct information.

3.       Include poem and/or prose contest entries that are neatly handwritten or typed and submitted with writer's name, address, phone number, and email address (if applicable) in the upper left-hand corner of the entry. 

4.       Poetry and prose contest entries may be submitted in a single envelope.

5.       Postmark deadline: October 1, 2018 at 11:59 PM, CDT

1.       Contestants should use a single email for submitting poetry and/or prose submissions.

2.       'Poetry Contest Entry' or 'Prose Contest Entry' must be typed in the subject line of the email. 

3.       Entry form information can be submitted as one of following ways:

a.       Completed the entry form with your current and correct information as an attachment to the email

b.       Included as on the first page in the typed Word processing document

c.       Typed into an email message body area

4.       Poetry or prose entries submitted as email attachments in a word processing document such as Microsoft Word (.doc) or (docx), PDF, or Jpeg.

Judges are panel members of the Fayetteville Public Library and Altrusa of Fayetteville Judging Committee.  All poems are judged on the basis of originality, creativity, characterization, artistic quality, adherence to the 30-line limit, and the ability to dream.  All prose entries are judge based on originality, creative imagination, character introduction and development, plot development, adherence to the (5) page limit, and the ability to dream.  All decisions of the judges are final.

All prizewinners will be notified by postal mail, email, or telephone and invited to attend the Recognition Celebration during the True Lit Festival. 


All poems and prose entries remain the property of the artist who has written or created them. By submitting a poem/story to this contest, the artist may also be eligible for the publication of her or his work by Altrusa International of Fayetteville, AR., Inc.  However, if any contest winner does not wish to have hers/his winning poem and/or story published online, one may request to have hers/his entry omitted.
