The Princess and the Goblin (Looking Glass Library)
The Princess and the Goblin (Looking Glass Library)
One of the most successful and beloved of Victorian fairy tales, George Macdonald’s The Princess and the Goblin tells the story of young Princess Irene and her friend Curdie, who must outwit the threatening goblins who live in caves beneath her mountain home. Macdonald’s pioneering use of fanstasy as a literary medium had a great influence on Lewis Carroll, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Madeleine L’Engle, all great admirers of his work, which has remained popular to this day. "I write, not for children," he wrote, "but for the child-like, whether they be of five, or fifty, or seventy-five."

Hotel Macdonald
Hotel Macdonald
In 1969 my family moved from a small town just north of Regina to Uranium City. The first leg of our journey took us from Regina to Edmonton. The second leg was by DC 3 to Uranium City. My mother, my sister and I traveled to Edmonton by bus. I remember the bus was very full and the bus driver rearranged the passengers so that my sister and mother could sit together, but there was no seat for me. So I got to sit on the bus driver's knee and help him drive the bus. I was six at the time and this was a big thrill. I remember the big steering wheel and the driver carefully maneuvering around me to get the bus on the road. Most of the trip was through the night. Eventually I fell asleep. When I awake, I was no longer sitting with the driver, I looked out of the window in the early morning light and there was a castle . . . to my 6 year old eyes it was a castle, it was the Hotel Macdonald. At the time, it was the most prominent building on the edge of the valley. For me it will always be a castle. I now live in Rossdale just below the Hotel.

That's my great grandma Martha Stowe MacDonald in the back . Margie Sandberg is on the far left. Her father, George Sandberg is the gentleman in the middle. His son, Kenny, is hanging off his hand. Those are Gram's two brothers carrying the bushels of berries. I'm not sure who the young lady to the right of Margie is.
