Description of the work

Health related fitness (HRF) is measured across European Member countries using different tests. A consensus of a standard HRF test battery needs to be determined and tested for European Health Monitoring activities as well as for European Member States. The work modules in work package 6 are both related to the assessment of health related fitness.

Work module 6.1: Fitness test for adults

coordinated by Jaana Suni (more info)

  • Easily applicable and reliable test are available for population assessment to measure health-related fitness (HRF). However, HRF is measured across European member countries using differing tests. A consensus of a standard HRF battery needs to be determined and tested for European Health Monitoring activities as well as for European Member States. Conduct a thorough literature review on currently used HRF test procedures in adults. This review should result in an overview of the problems related to existing HRF test procedures and possible solutions.
  • Develop and distribute a survey on currently used HRF test procedures in Member States. A single questionnaire will be developed by all work-packages, focusing on the different topics concerned with ALPHA. Per topic questions will be asked related to monitoring physical activity on a national level, with which tool is physical activity assessed, in which population etc.
  • Half way during the first year one should start with developing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for testing HRF in adults. Additionally, during the second part of the first year one should start with developing a question related to fitness, which will be added to the questionnaire.
  • Organize a common side session to the Kick-off Meeting with the other module in work package 6.
  • During the consensus meeting, the findings of the previous year’s work will be presented. The aim of the meeting is to come to a consensus regarding the SOP’s.
  • Translate the SOP and question into 6 different languages.
  • Draft the recommendations for the assessment of health related fitness in adults in European Member States.
  • Draft Booklet chapter
  • Produce DVD outlining the SOP for the HRF tests in adults and children.
  • Present the results at the Grand Final Meeting.

The deliverables for work module 6.1 are the following:

  • Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Health Related Fitness tests in adults.
  • DVD explaining the test procedures.
  • Summary booklet chapter stating the results of the SOP development, testing, and expert consultations as well as recommendations given.
