Description of the work

Various institutions are carrying out surveys of physical activity based on the IPAQ/GPAQ. As the questionnaire was modified in some cases, derived data is not comparable. In order to develop an instrument, which will enable comparable data, it is essential to establish one effective questionnaire. The work modules in work package 4 are all related to establishing an effective questionnaire.

Work module 4.1: Core questionnaire instrument development

coordinated by Michael Sjöström (more info)

  • Develop and distribute a survey on currently used questionnaires in Member States. A single questionnaire will be developed by all work-packages, focusing on the different topics concerned with ALPHA. Per topic, questions will be asked related to monitoring physical activity on a national level, with which tools physical activity is assessed, in which population etc.
  • Coordinate the survey to Member States, in order to keep the necessary contacts to member states’ institutions to a minimum.
  • Various institutions are carrying out surveys of physical activity based on the IPAQ/GPAQ. As the questionnaire was modified in some cases, derived data is not comparable. In order to develop an instrument, which will enable comparable data, it is essential to establish one effective questionnaire, proven to deliver reliable results. Distribute a survey among current users of the long and short versions of IPAQ, GPAQ and adapted versions.
  • Half way during the first year one should start with developing an improved version of the instrument.
  • Organize a side session to the Kick-off Meeting to introduce partners into the work.
  • During the consensus meeting with experts and stakeholders (incl. IPAQ, GPAQ and EUROSTAT), the findings of the previous year’s work will be presented. The aim of the meeting is to come to a consensus regarding how to monitor physical activity.
  • Execute cognitive testing of the new instrument.
  • Conduct a limited field-testing of the new version of the instrument, together with the other new modules. Additionally physical activity will be assessed through IPAQ, in order to compare the results.
  • Translate the module and questionnaire into six different languages.
  • Draft the recommendations for the usage of accelerometry in health monitoring.
  • Draft a Booklet chapter
  • Present the results at the Grand Final Meeting.

The deliverables for work module 4.1 are the following:

  • Improved questionnaire to assess physical activity in European Member States.
  • Summary booklet chapter stating the results of the questionnaire development, testing, and expert consultations as well as stating comparisons between the IPAQ and GPAQ.

Work module 4.2: Workplace Module development

coordinated by Lydia Kwak (more info)

  • Conduct a thorough literature review on existing work-related physical activity questionnaires. Emphasis should be placed on validity, reproducibility, strengths and weaknesses of these questionnaires. This review should result in an overview of the problems related to existing questionnaires and possible solutions.
  • Half way during the first year one should start with developing a workplace work module for the questionnaire.
  • Organize a side session to the Kick-off Meeting to introduce partners into the work.
  • During the consensus meeting, the findings of the previous year’s work will be presented. The aim of the meeting is to come to a consensus regarding how to monitor work-related physical activity, which questions should be included in the questionnaire etc.
  • Perform field-testing of the newly developed module and questionnaire, together with the other new modules. Additionally physical activity will be assessed through IPAQ, in order to compare the results.
  • Translate the module and questionnaire into 6 different languages.
  • Draft Booklet chapter
  • Present the results at the Grand Final Meeting.

The deliverables for work module 4.2 are the following:

  • Questionnaire module on the assessment of workplace related aspects of physical activity.
  • Summary booklet chapter stating the results of workplace module/questionnaire development, testing, and expert consultations.

Work module 4.3: Standard Operating Procedure for accelerometry (Karolinska Institute):

coordinated by Maria Hagströmer (more info)

  • Standard Operating Procedures for the use of accelerometry as an objective measurement of physical activity at population level in the European Member States need to be developed. Conduct a thorough literature review on currently used procedures in accelerometry. This review should result in an overview of the problems related to existing standard operating procedures (SOP) and possible solutions.
  • Develop and distribute a survey on currently used questionnaires in Member States. A single questionnaire will be developed by all work-packages, focusing on the different topics concerned with ALPHA. Per topic, questions will be asked related to monitoring physical activity on a national level, with which tools is physical activity assessed, in which population etc.
  • Half way during the first year one should start with developing a SOP for the use of accelerometry in population based health monitoring.
  • Organize a separate side session to the Kick-off Meeting to introduce partners into the work.
  • During the consensus meeting, the findings of the previous year’s work will be presented. The aim of the meeting is to come to a consensus regarding the SOP for accelerometry.
  • Execute field-testing of the newly development SOP.
  • Translate the SOP into six different languages.
  • Draft the recommendations for the usage of accelerometry in health monitoring.
  • Draft Booklet chapter.
  • Present the results at the Grand Final Meeting.

The deliverables for work module 4.3 are the following:

  • Standard Operating Procedure for the use of accelerometry to objectively monitor physical activity at population level.
  • Summary booklet chapter stating the results of accelerometry Standard Operating Procedure development, testing, and expert consultations.

Work module 4.4: Recommendations for assessing physical activity in children (Loughborough University):

coordinated by Fiona Bull (more info)

  • A basic understanding of levels and patterns of physical activity in early periods of live is still lacking. Useful methods for assessing physical activity still need to be developed for this special population group. As methodologies otherwise useful for adults, above all questionnaires are not applicable among young individuals and children. Conduct a thorough literature review on currently used instruments assessing physical activity in children. This review should result in an overview of the problems related to assessing physical activity in children and possible solutions.
  • Half way during the first year one should start with developing recommendations for the measurement of physical activity in children.
  • Consult experts on recommendations on the measurement of physical activity in children.
  • Organize a separate side session to the Kick-off Meeting to introduce partners into the work.
  • During the consensus meeting, the findings of the previous year’s work will be presented. The aim of the meeting is to come to a consensus regarding the measurement of physical activity in children.
  • Draft the recommendations for the measurement of physical activity in children.
  • Draft Booklet chapter.
  • Present the results at the Grand Final Meeting.

The deliverable for work module 4.4 is the following:

  • Summary booklet chapter stating the results of review and expert consultations on the measurement of physical activity in children as well as recommendations given.
